He probably did, but it probably required Carolina to take some cash back in the deal.

I want to say Steve MacIntyre by the Oilers. Or maybe Thomas Pock by the Islanders (who has since been waived again).

Crombeen and Koci (twice) have been picked up on waivers during the season as well

Bingo!
This move is totally cost-cutting. Kaberle has been good this year. It is going to take quite a bit to resign Seidenberg and Ruutu this offseason, so the `Canes need to move some contracts.

That and his injuries probably didn't help.

Although the Lightning are finally on a winning streak, he'd probably still be an upgrade over Marek Malik or Jamie Heward. I had wanted Frantisek for Tampa during the offseason, knowing that he was available. Not as sure now.

Apparently not if he wasn't traded.

Why would you waive him now though? And why waivers? Keep him until the deadline and try to collect a late pick for him. If that fails, then waivers are still an option.

He cleared. The article says Rutherford thought he may be claimed based on discussions he had.

Back in my day, players used to get claimed when they were put on waivers. Bad players, even!

Still a strong option that he gets packaged at the deadline.

Yes, but clearly he won't net a draft pick in return on his own. Carolina will have to take a contract in return, I'd guess. Barring, of course, injuries creating a need on a particular team.

not a bad idea but they could get a crack through re-entry too.............Thrashers have tons of space

I imagine Schneider goes at the deadline

I remember a few people putting him in the lower half of their top 50 players lists on HF. Although that was the summer after Carolina won the cup.

If what was said in the N&O is correct he won't be on re-entry as he won't be sent to Albany. Canes were just trying to get someone to claim him to save payroll room.

Not to be argumentative, but I think in this case, Carolina would prefer that he be claimed...he's on a one-way deal, so they'd still have to pay his full salary in the minors (no cap hit though)...

Claiming players off waivers isn't all it's cracked up to be, it's not as "free" as I think many people think it is...there's a lot of implications that aren't really considered in these type of threads...

I think you're going to see a lot of marginal players slip through with the economy going down the crapper/the caps perhaps going down. Why pay $2.2M for a guy you don't need?

They're still paying him! He has a one-way deal.
