MoDo Hockey Thread

Since there are a few other team specific threads, I think it's about time to start a MoDo Hockey thread. They will play their first preseason game tonight, against Skellefteå.

And there will also be a DVD about the team and their hometown of Örnsköldsvik, it'll be called "The Heart of Hockey" and it was broadcasted on Swedish television a while ago but will also be released on DVD, even an English-language version will be available, and I would think it'll be available in North America as well. Check out the trailer below.

Depends on what values you attach to it. Check out the interview with Pettersson and his thoughts.

SAIK won the preseason game tonight, 4-0 was the final score.

Today is a bad day for MoDo fans, when Magnus Wernblom, a living legend among MoDo fans since the early 90s, decided to hang'em up after having struggled quite a bit this season.

He will be missed, mostly among his own fans of course, but from what I have seen on other boards fans of other teams will kind of miss him too. Afterall he was a high profile player and not just another anonymous John Doe. He was the kind of player you love to have on your own team, but hate to have as an opponent.

Thanks for all these years Werner!

Amen to that. I think people will miss him more than they might think. We've always kind of taken Werner for granted and gotten used to him mixing it up with players from other teams. I wonder how long it takes before people start whispering in the corridors of Swedbank, praying for a new gritty tank that can bury the puck and take a beating in front of the net.

we'll miss our legendary number 9! thanx for everything

Even though I'm not a MoDo fan I love Wernblom. Mostly because of his three years in Skellefteå. It's really sad to see him quit.

I'm 100% sure that without Wernblom Skellefteå AIK wouldn't be in the SEL. Sure, we had Söderberg, Öberg, Åkerman etc but Wernblom was the leader.

Have a great life Wernblom!

The starting goalie Karol Krizan got his contract terminated with immediate effect today, leaving the team with Michal Zajkowski and Niklas Svedberg as the goalies (for now anyway).

What is wrong with MoDo Hockey this season? Apart from the injuries to several key players that made the team drop like a rock in the standings, seems like there are major internal problems as well. Many key players not contributing the way they normally would (or should), the team being the worst in both box play and power play, having allowed the most goals overall of all teams so far etc etc. Any ideas what the problem could be?

They don't defend or attack as a team. The players don't follow their defensive tactics and their offensive game is all about one man shows.

They also seem to lack of character.

Here's a guess from a non-MoDo fan:

1. "Kabben" Berglund
2. Magnus Wernblom/Peter Forsberg

And that's what I came up with, it's hard to number players for them as they've got a whole bunch of great ones but I believe that those three are some of the most loved ones.

Hopefully we have a MoDo fan here at the boards who can come up with a better one.

In my opinion, it'd be these guys. Daniel and Henrik Sedin are a package, hence the nomination of both of them, and Wernblom and Lundquist never played in the NHL so I provided their career stats as well.

Wernblom is an icon among MoDo fans, and Lundquist, nicknamed "The Iron Man", never missed a game during his whole career, that's pretty remarkable.

Markus Näslund
Daniel Sedin/Henrik Sedin

I just noticed MODO signed Mike Morrison.

What's the length of his contract? Only till the end of this season or also through 2009-10?
I just can't find any information on that matter.

Just this season, I mean it's a pure chance to sign him. I doubt they've seen him play, his stats in the last seasons are horrible.

What can you tell me about the guy?

MoDo missed the playoffs and that was a disappointment to say the least. And after having not played a single game for quite a while now, and having had a pretty quiet silly season as well (only signed Kristian Forsberg and released Fredrik Warg), quite a lot has happened the last few days.

It began with the signing of Daniel Sondell from Rögle, but the real big news were relieving both CEO Jerry Häggström and sports director Erik Holmberg from their duties, signing Miloslav Horava as the new head coach and for the first time in history MoDo will have a real goalie coach, with the signing of Tomas Bjuhr.

And breaking news just now tell that the assistant coach will likely be none less than Thomas Steen, a Swedish hockey legend. The signing of Steen is not official just yet but according to news sources it'll be official real soon.

This must be what we call "ketchup effect" in Sweden, first comes nothing, then comes nothing, then comes everything at once.

Very excited about the signings of Kristian Forsberg and Alexander Bonsaksen. Always great to see more Norwegians with my favorite Elitserien team

The "silly season" is quite calm so far for MoDo Hockey, not much to report there right now.

But there's a Canadian freelancer hockey writer called Jack Vallon, who will contribute to a MoDo blog every now and then. He's moving to a place near Örnsköldsvik, so for all you people who are interested in reading English language blogs about the team, here's his first entry.

Even though I dislike MoDo I'll have to follow that blog, sounds like an interesting project.

I have just received confirmation from Modo Hockey General Manager Fredrik Andersson that former Canucks captain Markus Naslund will join the club as a board member this season. Andersson added: "I will talk to him and see if he wants to play for us later in the season."

You mean kind of home grown players then, not Kallur/Steen/Påhlsson/Salo for example I guess.

1) Forsberg
2) Näslund
3-4) Sedins
5) Weinhandl/Timander
?) Victor Hedman?

So Foppa is skating with MoDo again huh?

He should stay there... (and then get Naslund to come out of retirement) Colorado is doing nothing for a while and No way Philly could fit him.

Would he really want to join a new team at the end?

Who knows. He loves hockey so I guess he would.

Anyway, he could do some use in a rebuilding Colorado too, he got one or two dekes to teach to the youngsters. Not that he will be there after rebuild, but he certainly could be there during it.

Nah that's stupid.. no matter how much Peter loves the game I don't see why he would risk even more pain for his foot just to play on a last place team.

Forsberg and Naslund need to lead MoDo to the promise land... I hear Markus plays a pretty mean Defense now.
