New Methodology for Rangers' Prospect Poll

Thanks to Kodiak for finishing the poll for me. Looking at the two types of prospect evaluations we've had here, the rolling poll and the top 25 list, I was trying to think of a way to do a poll that blunts the disadvantages of each format.

This is what I came up with:

Each round, participants list...
-One Prospect (1st Tier). Your 1st Tier prospect gets 10 pts.
-Two Prospects (2nd Tier). Your 2nd Tier prospects get 6 pts.
-Three Prospects (3rd Tier). Your 3rd Tier prospects get 3 pts.
-Four Prospects (4th Tier). Your 4th Tier prospects get 1 pt.

Point totals are compiled and prospects are ranked by points. The top six become the top six in the prospect rankings. Points for players that don't make the top six cut carry over the next round.

Participants list a new 1st/2nd/3rd/4th Tier of prospects for the new rounds. These points plus points left over from the 1st round are added to determine prospects 7-12. Rinse, lather, and repeat.

Personally i dont think limiting the tiers to set players is particularly accurate or fair.

i agree on kontos and guy that can score 92 points in junior is sure to make it in the nhl. i wonder what you think of broton? can he be as succesful as his brother?
i know i'm going to get killed for saying this but i loved the ron dugay ed mio trade. i'm with you blaisdell is going to be a really good player.

I agree. I don't feel Tjutin is in another "tier" from Montoya. Neither is Lundqvist or Jessiman, IMHO.

Well, perhaps tier is not the most accurate term to use. This is basically a weighted prospect list, where the player you have ranked #1 gets 10 points and has a clear point advantage over your #2 (and #3) ranked player(s). It doesn't mean that because I list Tjutin as 1st Tier and Montoya/Lundqvist as 2nd Tier that I think that Tjutin is on separate level as a prospect than the goalies. It's just that he's the guy I have at #1 on my list. (And next round, the "1st Tier" prospect is the guy you think most deserving of the #7 ranking.)

Unlike the rolling poll I conducted, where you can vote for your guy 8 polls in a row to no effect, this method doesn't punish you for going against the conventional wisdom.

It's not nearly as onerous as getting a bunch of people to make a top 25 prospect list and then tallying up the points, and it's more fair than a straight numerical ranking, especially lower down on the list. Ranking Potter vs Guenin, how many people here have a clear idea of which one's a superior prospect? But if you see them as roughly equivalent, you can put them in the same tier and avoid making a false either/or choice.

I could just ask for everyone's top 10 list and award 10 pts. for a #1, 9 pts. for a #2 and so on. But that can be misleading with a limited sample size. A prospect can get a clear majority of #1 votes and still not get the most points. A few contrary voters can skew the poll by declaring the consensus #1 a bust and ranking him low or leaving him off, throwing the poll to a prospect with few (or even no) #1 votes, but is the consensus #2. Ergo, I'm trying a weighted poll.

Point totals so far...

Tjutin 112 pts.
Montoya 64 pts.
Jessiman 51 pts.
Korpikoski 45 pts.
Balej 40 pts.
Lundqvist 29 pts.
-------------------
Kondratiev 14 pts.
Pock 12 pts.
Prucha 9 pts.
Baranka 6 pts.
Immonen 6 pts.
Murray 4 pts.

D. Moore, Jonasen, Helminen, Dawes, Graham 1 pt. each.

Like to get some more votes.

Well I agree it's fun, I hope you didn't take it as a shot at ya.

Personally what i like is the idea of a ratings system. Regular lists even don't do justice. For example someone could be ranked fourth but not all that less talented than the guy ranked number 1. Converly the guy ranked fifth could be a big drop from the fourth ranked player.

Maybe do something similar to what the Rangers do when they are gearing up for a draft, give him a rating of 1-100.

This way it gives an actual rating to player {which you can average out} and paints perhaps a clearer picture of their ranking and ability. I think that might be fun as well.
