Would you trade Gomez for Gaborik in June?

Pierre LeBrun-ESPN

Quote:
Gaborik's future
One last point from us on Marian Gaborik. Given that he's out until at least mid-March as he recovers from the hip surgery he'll have Monday, his trade value took a serious hit.

However, one NHL executive told us Saturday that perhaps the Wild could still move him to a team that's desperately trying to move a long-term salary. The theory is that some NHL GMs are feeling the heat from ownership to cut payroll moving forward because of the economic downturn. The trade would be apples for apples this season in terms of salary, but, obviously, Gaborik comes off the books after the season. Food for thought
.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/...=lebrun_pierre

Minnesota offered Gaborik $7-8 million per in a long term deal.Gomez is familiar with Jacques' system in Minny since the Devils still played Jacques system when Gomez was there.Minny is near Alaska so they wouldn't be one of the three teams on his NTC list.Minny will end up paying another group III very close to make Gomez makes. The Rangers receive salary cap relief for the future. The 2009-10 cap will remain status quo but the future cap in 10-11 could decrease.Maybe the Rangers could sign Gaborik to a 1 year deal for 09-10. If he wants to play in Vancouver or LA next season, the Rangers will still get the Gomez money off their books. It's interesting.Slats and Risebrough are old buds.

Lou, Jacques and Riseborough are probably closer than Sather is, and Lou would tell them to stay away and not to touch Gomez. He's lazy.

Absolutely. Forget about comparing Gomez and Gaborik as players (they're pretty even overall I think). The simply fact that we would have one of these 7M+ contracts come off the books after next season makes it a trade worth making. Even if Gaborik leaves after 1 year here. Losing his contract should have more value to the Rangers than keeping Gomez's contract until it's over.

Although I don't get the comment about Minny being close to Alaska. I think it's pretty ****ing far, and don't think Gomez would see being traded to Minny as moving close to his hometown.

Trade away a fraud of a player with a massive contract for a real hockey player? Is this even a serious question?

You have to stay on the ice to be considered a "real hockey player". I'm hating on Gomez as much as anybody right now, but this would be a salary dump only and an admission of a serious mistake. That isn't Sather's game. This will not happen.

If Sather turned it down I would hate him for life. I would love to have Gaborik on this team. We didn't lose anything to get Gomez and we won't lose anything giving him away. Anyone care to take a shot a the new lines if this trade takes place?

The down side is if Gaborik ends up on the Longtime Injury reserve shortly after joining the Rangers our Lines would be scary bad.

It isn't about getting something for Gomez. I would give him away for free. I would trade Gomez for a bag of pucks. His contract is horrid. Of course I would trade him for Gaborik, even if Gaborik goes somewhere else. Just get that contract off the books before the summer of 2010.

so far he's played 6 games this year. Completely unreliable. If Minnesota wants to get rid of Gaborik. It's because they know that although he's a world class talent, he's unreliable and injury prone.

In a second. Even if it's the day before Free Agency starts.

I don't care, I want Gomez out of here. Hated the signing from the start.

How much are you guys willing to pay this man with a history of right leg and groin problems? Now he's having surgery on his hip. What's next?
Although it will be interesting to see who signs this guy for what he wants. I'd love to have him (without all the baggage of injuries) but Minnesota's just gonna let this guy go at the end of the year and look else where in the free agent market.

Yes. Even if we lose Gaborik to FA, it clears a ton of cap space. I know we'd be getting nothing else of value back, but whatever.

Hell no. Never liked him when he was on the devils. I called him Gutless Gomez for years. But if he does, then he would never go to Minnesota since he "always" wanted to play in front of the bright lights of Broadway in a highly offensive team. Certainly, not the Devils West.

Besides, we don't need a thrid line center just messing around.

I think they would take Drury over Gomez. Which one has NMC/NTC?

Forget signing Gaborik, do the deal and then let him walk. He's going to spend half the season on the DL anyway, and then all we'll do is complain about his salary.
