THN Future Watch 09

It's normally out in late February, early March so I'm pretty sure they're working on it right now. I believe they do the player write-ups right after the WJC.

Care to take a stab at what your teams top 5 will be? Keep in mind that it's not your own opinion, but what you think THN will have your top 5 as.

Montreal:

1.Max Pacioretty
2.Ryan McDonagh
3.PK Subban
4.Ben Maxwell
5.Yannick Weber

(in no particular order..I see the bottom 5 including: David Fischer, Danny Kristo, Kyle Chipchura, Mathieu Carle and Ryan White)

I'm also assuming they'd consider Matt D'Agostini graduated.

Also, anyone care to predict the number 1 ranked prospect in the world (keep in mind they have to be property of an NHL team)? Who do you think will be in the cover? The last 3 years it's been Carey Price, Erik Johnson, and Evgeni Malkin.

Unless they do a second one, I got mine at the begining of the season.

they only do it once per year. The last was the 2008 issue released last February/March with Price on the cover. It's a special annual magazine.

They almost always butcher the Sens rankings, so I could care less.

At least the number 1 is pretty much a lock in Erik Karlsson. He's won best defenceman two years in a row at the WJCs.

He didn't win best defenceman at the WJC two years in a row. One was at the WJC that just finished and the other was the U18 tournament that was in Kazan, Russia last April... I'm pretty sure.

Edmonton Oilers

1. Rob Schremp
2. Gilbert Brule
3. Jordan Eberle
4. Taylor Chorney
5. Riley Nash

I'm not sure if Schremp and Brule are still eligible for that list. If not,

1. Jordan Eberle
2. Taylor Chorney
3. Riley Nash
4. Theo Peckham
5. Jeff Petry

What's the criteria (regarding age or NHL games played)?

Vancouver:

1. Cody Hodgson
2. Cory Schnieder
3. Michael Grabner
4. Patrick White
5. Yann Sauve

So glad we got Hodgson, our prospect pool could use alot more depth though. Hopefully Gillis makes some genius picks in 2009

It usually seems like they take guys with no NHL games or like less than 10 games.

Without digging up an old copy, I think their criteria is basically whether or not they're an NHL regular when they poll their anonymous scouts. So somebody like Claude Giroux will probably be considered a prospect if they do the polling soon, but might also be a full fledged NHLer by the time the Future Watch issue is published. Whereas somebody like Brandon Sutter probably won't be considered a prospect even though he's still very much developing.

Assuming Hendry and Hjalmarsson are graduated and Niemi is too old...

1. Kyle Beach
2. Jack Skille
3. Petri Kontiola
4. Igor Makarov
5. Akim Aliu

this is correct.

I have every single Future Watch issue THN has released and it appears that as long as they are not NHL regulars yet, they qualify. I don't even think there is an age limit, as I have seen players who are 25 on the lists..

Minnesota Wild:

1.Tyler Cuma
2.Marco Scandella
3.Anton Khudobin
4.Clayton Stoner
5.Peter Olvecky

Graduated:
Benoit Pouliot
Colton Gillies
Cal Clutterbuck

The Wild sorta not looking good. You have to keep in mind that there is 1 20-yr old on the roster (Sheppard), and 3 graduates, including 19-year old Gillies

Those 3 would look great on the list but since they can't, we have terrible depth. Khudobin is fun to follow but he still has a long road ahead of him, and two AHLer (Stoner and Olvecky) making the top 5 is bad. They might make depth players in the NHL but thats it, #5-6 dman or a 4th liner.

Apparently quite well. 22 points in 38 games with Providence, places him 12 among AHL rookies. He's acclimating himself to pro hockey and doing a bit of maturing along the way. Perhaps the most positive news for Bruins fans is something Rob Murray told HF's Janine Pilkington:
Quote:
I’ve been really pleased with him, his attitude’s been great. He’s not an issue off the ice at all, and he’s been a great kid for me.

If they know what they are talking about:

1. Backlund
2. Irving
3. Pelech
4. Negrin
5. Wahl/Nemisz

You can swap the bottom 3 around and I wouldn't take much issue.

What I fear is that we see:

1. Backlund
2. Irving
3. RYDER
4. PUUSTINEN
5. CHUCKO

Or something like that.

Vancouver

1. Cody Hodgson
2. Cory Schneider
3. Michael Grabner
4. Yann Sauve
5. Daniel Rahimi

I don't know if Jannik Hansen still qualifies for FW, but if he does, he would be third on the list.

looking at the publishing schedule spreadsheet I was sent by one of their advertising managers..it looks like it'll be on sale March 9th. Subscribers should receive it in late February i'm assuming. Probably about a week or so before stores.

Have they got better at this?
This was one of the reasons why I canned my subscription a handful of years ago. Ignoring the discounted price that subscription offered, it bugged me that I would see new issues in stores a week or two before it showed up in my mailbox.
