who would you rather have?

Gomez or Lang?

I remember arguing in favour of Lang as our no 2 center couple years ago and he was poopooed as useless by many here. Since he has done good work in Chicago and now in Montreal at a fraction of the cost.

I reckon had we taken Lang over Gomez 2 years ago Jagr would still be here!

10 years ago? Lang. Now? Gomez.

as for the Jagr thing.. having Lang follow him to 3 different teams is just silly, and it wouldn't have changed his current absence, and if it did, we'd have two old czech's putting up maybe 60pts each.. it wouldn't be elevating their respective games.

that "old swede" has the most goals on this team and hardly(If any) boneheaded moves unlike most of the rest of the team.

still he will struggle to put up the numbers one legged jags had...but that's not the discussion here.

I always liked Lang and he proves year in year out that he can play with all sorts of players and that he is a smart player for both sides of the ring. Adam Oates comes to mind.
this cannot be said of Gomez.

Lang, yes. But don't insult Jags. He'd put up 70 at the very least.

If he was signed a couple seasons ago and Jagr was to remain a couple more seasons, then Lang. But the idea was to go a different direction (away from Jagr) and Gomez [and Drury] were the guys Sather went to. In that instance, I would not have gone with Lang. I believe he struggled when not playing on a very good offensive team that was void of top-flight wingers and depth of quality centerman - he'd struggle in NYC also.

Lang is having a career first half of a season, much like Shanahan had last year. Lang was a non-factor with Chicago last year and wasn't expected to put up number like this. Let's see how his whole season ends up.

I would rather take my chances with a 29 year old than with a 38 year old, especially when the 29 year old averages more points per season.

Lang has averaged 61.75 points over the last 4 seasons. It's not like he's some scrub. Also, he's not really having a career year. He's having one of his best years in terms of goals, but he's done better in terms of points in a few previous seasons.

I chose Lang because I never liked Gomez and would have rather had to overpay for Lang than overpay for Gomez.

during that offseason i wanted the rangers to sign Nylander and Lang... best 2 options available imho when you factor in production and pricetag.

i still think that was the move to make.

I think Lang's age speaks clearly against him, but then we so wanted Sundin.
so you can't hold lang's age against him and be in favour of sundin....
Lang is no sundin....agree but he is also much cheaper.
I think at this point I would rather have Lang on a shorter lease than being committed to Gomez for another decade

and Lang has been a plus player thoughout his 30's!!!!

Great, because he's the only thing you're going to be seeing any time soon, since this team doesn't have any great scoring prospects nor the cap space to sign a finisher thanks to contracts like Gomez, Drury and Redden.

Enjoy those 17 goal, 50 assist seasons and the half-decade of first or second round eliminations.

this is just what I read at the NHL all star line up:

Quote

2MARK STREIT
DEFENSE - NEW YORK ISLANDERS
One of the prizes of the free-agency period last summer, Streit has been everything the Isles wanted.

Why don't they rub it in a bit harder

I wouldn't say half the dough - more like 2/3, but that savings of $2.4MM could've gone a long way.

Less money, less years, better player.

Less money and years certainly, but I vehemently disagree that Lang is the better player. In the past four years, Gomez has averaged 11 more points than Lang while playing on the offensively challenged (prior to this year) New Jersey Devils.

If Lang doesnt pot a hat trick last night, we're not having this discussion.

I cant believe people would want an ancient Lang on this team over a 29 year old Gomez.

If you're talking contracts too, maybe theres a point to be made there...but looking at this in a vacuum, Gomez is the better player...its not really close either.

I was on your side, HLR. I wanted Lang to replace Ruccin's void. But as of today Lang is less then Nedved. We could have gotten Nedved cheap, he played well, but Sather had Shanny in his head then.
As far as hockey smarts are concerned, Gomez may not play long enough to become as good as Lang circa 10 years ago. I never wanted Gomez. May be because personnaly I see no value in speed. Cullien fiasco was a valuable proof to it.
