mmm - ok, that makes sense. I think something was lost in the way we're writing it, as I said it to myself aloud and that's about how I say it.

Still, it's getting awfully sensitive given how badly some names are butchered. Those are very close to the Anglophone ear, as you note.

Pierre Houde is hyper-correct to the point where most people think he's wrong. He's the only guy in the media who seeks them out and is determined to get their names spot on. Good for him.

Which is why they learned the proper pronunciation, presumably.

If I remember correctly, Huet accepts both pronunciations. He said that "Hew-ett" is the right way to pronounce it and that it's what they call him in France, but he's okay with being called "Hew-ay" in Canada and States.

I think a lot of players don't care, which also makes a difference. It's a long standing tradition to have last names from Europe pronounced differently in English. Hell, we do it to country names, why not last names?

Nonetheless, good on Houde for doing his due diligence.

Well, you can go there : http://canadiens.nhl.tv/team/console.jsp

Then you go : Canadiens Face à Face and you click on "Message des fêtes 4"

You'll see Maxim Lapierre say his own name and then you'll know how to say it ^^

Because he asks the player how he wants to be called. Same with Michel Lacroix who does the same.

That is how we get Yannick Veber, Radek Vorjak, Huette, etc

The only ones he didn't pronounce correctly as per the original language's pronounciation are the Swedish names. He says Swedish is too alien too pronounce right and it would just confuse people.

Seeing as how this was Michel Lacroix' idea, and that Mr. Lacroix is the one put in charge of teaching the local announcers how to say names in various languages for the Olympics, I'd say those are the way you say those names. A man who can teach a Japanese person to say "Sergei Krivokrasov" correctly, without it gaining a ton of extra "u" and a couple of "b"s, probably knows a lot about names to the point that I can say that other ways to say it are the wrong way.

In Italian, it's Pac-i-o-retty(i). So he's not wrong.

Oh, come on, you have no rights to call somebody ******** just because you haven't bothered to find out what the right pronunciation for Kovalev's name is. What's your idea on how to pronounce it correctly?

It should be more like "Koval-yoff", but still better than how most people say it.

Actually, Pierre is onr of those rare guys that goes through alot of trouble to find the correct pronounciation of player names. He asks most players their correct pronounciation in their native land and not how it is pronounced here to simplify it for the casual fan. When he first said Pleks name correctly I thought he was nuts but it turned out he took the time to ask and got the right pronounciation from the player himself.

If he is the only one pronoucing it Vokoun's name correctly and everybody else chooses to say it wrong doesn't make Pierre wrong. I'll bet he is the one that is right based on his obsession with this issue.

They all makes mistakes...

Even if it is annoying, we have to get over it.

Houde makes mistakes too. They all do. An example is Washington's John Erskine, which Houde calls ErskIne... like it rhymes with with pine. It does not. It rhymes with skin.

To be honest, the one that always makes my skin crawl is the way most French speaking commentators say the Florida "Panters".... removing the "H".

It makes them seem like a team of guys gasping for air.

It's a small annoyance... but we all do it at some point.

Yeah, the whole 'th' sound is kind of lost on the french sometimes. Atleast the panthers get off better than atlanta, who become the trashers everytime they play montreal.

I wonder what would happen if someone started a thread asking who "Amerlik" and "Alak" are?

It's tough for English commentators to pronounce French names in the heat of the moment, and vice-versa. There's no real reason to get riled up about it, unless it's being done intentionally ("Pokaharsky" is a classic though). It's just something that you have to live with as a Habs fan. As an English speaker with limited French language skills (I can read French and understand hockey commentary, but that's about it), I actually find it sort of endearing when French commentators mispronounce names because of their accent.
