Steven Anthony: Fact Or Fiction?

Hey guys,
I've heard varying things about him - anywhere from he's the one of the next Elite prospects to people just thinking he was playing against weak competition.
What do you guys think? Who would he be comparable too (granted, I konw that's hard to do probably right now as he isn't draft eligible for 3 years)?

best talent I have seen since Sidney Crosby in the Midget ranks, this guy is really special, he is a step down from Crosby, but I would say his game and style reminds me of a young Joe Thornton, playmaking wizard, great awarness and size, he just needs to start hitting more. Everytime he is out there he creates something and he just makes you take notice.

Nova Scotia isn't a weak Midget league anymore, it is a pretty good development league now, Sidney Crosby, James Sheppard, Ryan Hillier, Brad Marchand, Colin White, etc have all came from there.

Does anyone else think the label "phenom" is tossed around a bit too easily?

Watched him last Sunday...2 goals 2 assists and it looked like he was still adjusting to the AAA level.

He has size, speed and strength, and top end skills to boot.

He scored a beauty where he took a bad pass off the skate and put it top shelf in 1 motion. You dont see that at the AAA level but it looked effortless to him.

Is he as good as Crosby? No. But he is a damn good player.

Also the Subways coach said he reminds him of a more skilled, speedier James Sheppard.

Not to mention that he's good decent size for such a young age. It will be interesting to see if he continues to grow. He's something like 6'1, 175 right now.

EDIT: Found a Daily News article: http://www.hfxnews.ca/index.cfm?sid=8057&sc=3
6'2", 190

Anthony has already caught the attention of Antigonish-based International Scouting Service, which ranks him No. 1 for next year's Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft.

One major midget coach suggested Anthony will "probably score two to two-and-a-half points per game
Not a bad outlook. How does he use his size? I've never seen Sheppard play, is there an NHLer whose style is similar?

Joe Thornton is a good comparison, although Anthony is more of a shooter than a passer.

Now all he needs is a Jonathan Cheechoo who is more of a passer than a shooter.

Is he eilligible in 2009 or 2010?

2009 is going to be a NICE draft to be anywhere in the top 10. Some absolutely sick players could make this one of the most top-heavy drafts ever.

That draft is 3 years away. Saying how it will end up seems a little premature to me .

Finally a Steve Anthony showing....offensive player of the week with 8 points in 2 games. 6 point in one game.

Looks like he's finally getting some opportunity now that has been Didomenico sent away.

Being from Saint John, I am quite excited to see some space cleared for him. His skills do not lend themselves to his being groomed as a 3/4th line grinder in major junior. Btween the fact that he was waiting in the wings, and that we got a good return, it makes the loss of Dido that much easier. Wish I could see an icetime chart to see the upgrade in time since Chris left, but either way, he is producing more. Unfortunately, I've yet to have a chance to see him play since Dido left.

This guy will probably go early 2nd round and maybe even 1st if someone seen him lately. He really has a skill set that could translate to the NHL. Very good vision for a 17 year old, actually makes passes on the tape. Horrible on faceoffs, doesn't take the body all that often but will go to the front of the net and compete in the corners. Good offensive awareness, knows where the puck will end up, average shot right now. Great size already, 6`2 205. Very good skater for his size.

This is always said about drafts happening in 3 years.

not really.

the 2007 draft didn't have as much hype in 2004, nor did the 2008 draft have as much hype in 2005 as the 2009 draft had in 2006.

I also don't see anyone touting the 2012 draft today as potentially spectacular, nor have I seen the 2011 draft drooled-over in the past year.
