Estimate Backstrom/Semin 10/11 cap hit

What do you think Backstrom & Semin will sign for, altogether?

It would be good to have a collective estimate, then we'll have a better idea of how much cap space might remain for any "luxuries" (e.g. veteran d-man). For now, lets assume (yeah, I know) that the cap ceiling will stay the same..

Some comparables:
Vanek 7.1M, Havlat 6M.
Kopitar 6.8M, Stastny 6.6M

I voted $12M, just because I'm optimistic.

Total cap hit really doesn't matter to me though, I'm more interested in their cap hit increase.

I'd ballpark that at somewhere in the $5M-$7M range between them.

12M, I think Backstrom 6.5, Semin 5.5. All this goes out the window, though, if Semin has a huge 09/10.

Curious....when is the earliest either could sign an extension? In our favor is the fact that Semin can't seem to stay healthy.

$7M each, if we're lucky. GM hasn't, at least recently, had any luck signing his FAs for what one would consider a bargain.

Green's cap hit looks pretty good considering his production, IMO.

This coming summer both of them could be signed. I think they try to get Backstrom done right away, and maybe sign Semin if he takes an injury-discount.

I went for the low end. I have no idea why, but I suspect these contracts aren't going to be as bad as we might fear. The falling cap around that time could begin to act as pressure on rising contracts as well. $11M or less.

We can start work on Backstrom in July. I'm not sure about Semin.

I say Semin will be traded. Tying up $24 mil in 3 players isn't a good idea, see my Lightning as evidence...

Backstrom needs to be extended as soon as possible IMO.

I still think that unless Semin is willing to take a discount to play "Tonto" to Ovechkin's "Lone Ranger" and/or he enjoys being out of the spotlight, he may end up getting moved. Best case, he's willing to stay and make good $$, but less than he can get if he wanted to be "the man" in another city.

It's not ideal, but with good drafting and a steady stream of prospects it's doable.

With Ovechkin locked into his deal, any all star quality players the team develops are going to cause the same issue.

Backstrom will get somewhere between 6 and 7, looking at Kopitar (6.8), Spezza (7, I think?) and Heatley (7.5).

The Caps can also use Richards' contract to keep it low.

For Semin, I would say around $5M, and Backstrom around $6M.

If Kopitar can command $6.8 I don't see how we can expect GMGM to go to Backstroms agent with much less without getting laughed at, and if Semin can stay healthy for a decent amount of time he's easily gonna warrant around $7+ (theres been no indication he's willing to give any discounts...certainly not by his current deal).

I said $13, but after lookin at it I think we're lookin at much closer to $14-15.

I also voted $13mil. At this point, Semin staying healthy seems a little optomisitic. We have to hope that Semin is willing to accept less to stick with Ovy.

I've always thought that if Semin exploded he would have to be moved.
