I got a Habs jersey personalized with my name and number in 2004. I didn't get it to feel like i'm on the team, it's just neat to have my own name and my favorite number stiched on to a Habs jersey. And about the whole ''well, you're not on the team'' crap, well are you Carey Price, Saku Koivu, Mike Komisarek, etc., etc.? Plus, like some other guy mentioned, if you have a player jersey, there's always the chance of that player getting traded or signing with another team.
''Damn, Ryder just signed with Boston. I just got his jersey a few months ago. Gee, i'm going to feel like a dork if I wear this to a game''.
I was actually hoping that they wouldn't put the names on the vintage jerseys for the 100th for that reason... but i guess the PA wouldn't be happy as they would get less money. I think the PA gets a direct cut anytime a jersey is sold with a player's name and number on it.
Thats why you can't order retired name/number combos on NHLshop.com
I have absolutely no problem with it. My dad bought me a mario lemieux jersey and put my name on it when i was a kid. I was young back then, so it's different, but I have no objection whatsoever to people doing it. It's your money, your jersey, do what you want. Players get traded too or left unsigned, so like people said, ryder jerseys might look weird, especially since he's on the bruins, and even more so if we're playing vs the bruins.
I'm surprised people even object to this whatsoever. Some people say "I want to be like Koivu" and get a #11, some people say if i'm talking pure fantasy, why the hell can't I take it a step further and put my own name on it and make it more personal?
