That'd be cool, it could work for Travel too Chicago is the furthest west but it's closer I think to teams like New York and Boston then it is to teams like LA or Anaheim.

that'd deffintly be fun

Toronto
Montreal
Chicago
Detroit
Boston
NYRangers

Yeah, even if they only did it for one season, it could be fun, maybe for an anniversary of some sort. It'd throw the other divisions into a little bit of disarray however as you would be taking 2 from the Central, 3 from the NorthEast, and 1 from the Atlantic.

It would definitely allow for some old established rivalries to be renewed...I like it.

I don't know if an original six division is all that possible, but at the very least i think the league should let them kick of the season, have all original six teams play the first night of the season or something.

They should get rid of the east/west and bring back the campbell/wales conferences.

No division but they should play a minimum of 6 times a year.

All origonal 6 teams in one conference? Thus leaving one conference high and dry without any?

It will never..ever happen.

Excellent Idea. Too much focus is givin to the second half of the season and not the first.

Just get rid of the conference system then. Let everybody face everybody at least once, preferably twice (home and away) then let #1 seed in the nhl face #16 seed in the quarter finals, that way the regular season would actually mean something.

For traveling purposes, it helps to have divisions so that teams more often are playing teams geographically closer to them. One thing I've considered is similar to the thought of abandoning the divisions and each team would just play the 5 geographically closest teams to them 6 games a season, like a division foe, and then the next closest 10 teams they would play 4 times a season, like a conference foe, and then the teams that are farther away would be like the out-of-conference matchups. Toss out the conferences and divisions as they are. Of course most fans of hockey are too conservative and traditional to support such a liberal idea.

I remember a time or two the past couple of seasons where they did in fact have a day where three of the games were Original 6 matchups, so this isn't completely foreign.

Better yet, make your division rivals play 8 times a season instead of 6 for 32 games a season, then play the other 10 teams in your conference 4 times a season as is now for another 40 games, and there you have a 72 game schedule.

No thanks, most other teams in the SE Division are terrible draws in Tampa.

As for the original proposal, I don't care one way or another, but I do prefer to live in the present.

I like it, I think the NHL needs to push its rivalries harder. I mean, the Islanders and the Rangers don't need to be in the same division to be rivals, right?

As mentioned before, it'd be a powerhouse - but look at the divisions these teams are in now anyway.

Obviously the playoff seedings and stuff would have to be fixed but the divisions arent too bad.

So here is how last years standings would have looked with my new divisions:

O6 Division

Detroit 109
Boston 104
Toronto 103
Montreal 93
NYR 69
Chicago 59

Metropolis Division

Ottawa 102
Philadelphia 101
New Jersey 100
NYI 95
Buffalo 85
Pittsburgh 58

Coastal Division

Tampa Bay 106
Nashville 91
Atlanta 78
Carolina 76
Florida 75
Washington 59

Midland Division

Colorado 100
Calgary 94
St Louis 91
Edmonton 89
Minnesota 83
Columbus 62

Sunset Division

San Jose 104
Vancouver 101
Dallas 97
Los Angeles 81
Anaheim 76
Phoenix 68

Playoff seedings
(top 3 in each div plus wild card, seeded #1-16 overall)

DET vs NYI
TB vs ATL
SJ vs NSH*
BOS vs STL
TOR vs CAL*
OTT vs DAL*
VAN vs COL
PHI vs NJ

Note: NYI qualifies as highest point getter not in top 3 in the division
*2-3-2 format to save on travel?

The reason they won't do this is because getting original six teams into some of the newer expansion teams (and even some of the not-so-new ones) is because that's 2 to 4 less games that they play these teams get to draw large crowds.

All that said, I love the idea. Detroit - Toronto/Montreal games have always been special events for me and I hate only seeing them each once a year in the Joe, if I'm lucky.
