Taking into consideration what they gave up for him adn their first round exit I say they accept the arbitrator's decision...

They walked away from Berard a few years ago so who knows....

No, that would be a terrible move, even for the financially sound (some might say 'cheap' ) Bruins.

What exactly is there to "gamble"?!?

That Gonchar will come crawling back to sign at a lower price?

That the 5.5 mils can be used to sign Zhitnik and Murray?

I don't see why they would walk away...

what they offered him to begin with, wasn't that much lower... and when they acquired him, they had to know he'd cost them somewhere around what he got.

I think overall it's a fair reward, and they will consider it fair.... they did lose Rolston and Knuble from their payroll and will probably lose Murray too... not to mention Potvin's salary, and with Raycroft playing like he did, they probably don't need to worry about having a multi-million $$ backup like they did before.

I think the Bruins are probably pleased with the award when all is said and done... this isn't like Berard, a guy coming off a serious injury who isn't close to the same player... they have an elite dman in Gonchar, who is among the top offensive dmen in the league, and probably a top 10 dman overall... at $5.5 mill a year, they'd be crazy to walk away.

The bruins offered somewhere around 4.75 mill. Why whould they not sign him at 5.5, instead of the 8.5 he was asking for?

Not a chance, after giving up what they did for him and the mass exodus of UFA's their seeing they'll snap him up at 5.5M and be thrilled they got him as cheaply as they did.

Whether he's with them after the next season is debtaeable, but I'd be stunned if they seriously considered walking away from this one.

No, that award will fit in their budget. Yet I think the odds are very much against his deciding to sign an extension with Boston, long term. I do not see why fans of the team are suggesting that this helps the Bruins' chances in that regard.

Just because an arbitrator decided that Gonchar as a RFA was worth $5.5M does not remotely mean that sets Gonchar's value as a UFA on the open market. It's apples and oranges.

No, I think that MOC even said in the TSN article that he was going to keep Gonchar.

they can't afford to walk away from that after what they gave up for him. Its not that bad a deal, I thought he might get more.

Awards:
Yeah... they already officially accepted the decision so this is moot.
