That would be sweet. They had one in Las Vegas, so I think they can pull it off elsewhere. I would totally buy tickets and goto that if they pulled it off.

I can't imagine 100k at at a hockey game in So Cal. Also, isn't the Rose Bowl on New Years day? I didn't read the article so maybe it is the National Championship game that year and played on a different day but it'd be hard to set up and remove that quick to play a football game days later. I'd go but I won't hold my breath for this happening.

Have you been to the (old) Ontario ice rink in August?

Haha! That place is a real piece of ****. Is it even open anymore? I play at the new one occasionally but the old one is just in shambles. I've actually skated through some sand there.

At lunch today, I heard Gary Bettman talking about this article on his XM show. He basically said that they weren't considering it. It was just a "what if" in the far future. They would hit all cold cities before it would happen. He mentioned they would just be leaving too much up to the weather, something they have no control over. The warmest conditions the new technology could handle is 55F, and he said that would be really really pushing it. Considering we're only 15 days past the Winter Classic and it's 80 degrees pretty much says it all.

The indoor rinks here in SoCal have a tough time making decent ice. Putting an outdoor game here would be a disaster.

Yeah, a BIG church that was just rented out for an AC/DC concert last month - Nice! (how does that discussion "happen" in the church board meeting?)

...and the Rose Bowl sucks for football - it would be even worse for hockey.

This was one of the stupidest things I read yesterday. First off, outdoor hockey here... ha! Last time I checked....it's January and 80 something degrees.

And secondly, and most obviously....there is no way in hell the Rose Bowl let's this happen anywhere remotely close to January 1.

But most of all, the league - especially Bettman - has such a flippin jaded appetite for stuff. It utterly amazes me how the league gets it's hands on something and completely flippin over does it. The whole concept of the outdoor in Edmonton 3-yrs ago was to honor two storied programs in a unique setting. Now, the league is trying to make it commonplace. Which, IMO, will devalue the overall signifigance of the whole damn thing in 1 or 2 more years.

So like many things the league has mettled with and made a mess of, good luck on ruining something special and unique.

Oh, good morning! Yes....bitter table for one....coffee black.

Agreed that this is never coming to So Cal. But you really think having it annually devalues it that much that there won't be interest in a few years? They've done it two years in a row now and this season got the best ratings for a game in over 30 years. I'd imagine if the league said the next game will be in 3 or 4 years, people would call them stupid for not making it an annual thing. I know people at work who are not hockey fans have watched it because that whole day is usually filled with football so it is a bit of a change and something very unique (happens once a year). Last year they may have watched it because I went and that sparked their interest but people that know I'm a hockey fan were commenting the following week (this year) about watching it. This is in So Cal so I'd imagine in cold weather climates the interest is even bigger.

I think it is a great thing to do annually... that is my opinion.

I like the event... but having it annually - I feel - will take away from the allure of having it every so often. How about saving it for a monumental year/event. Plus, how many teams are strong enough or even viable enough for a U.S. audience. Watching the same teams year in and year will get lame real quick.

The idea of seeing a outdoor hockey game in socal makes my blood boil. Its suppose to be outdoors freezing cold... that is what makes it special. Count me out.

Right, because SoCal doesn't have winters. In fact SoCal doesn't even have January. [/sarcasm]

There is no rule that the Winter Classic has to take place in a blizzard.

I'm not saying it should be in SoCal, but don't discount the cold-weather tourists coming to SoCal to vacation and see an outdoor game here. It can be done.

I was about to say .... isn't this a New Year's Day event? The Winter Classic needs to stay on New Year's Day or else they will screw up one of the best things about it. Rose Bowl ... fuggeddaboutit!

They're probably just throwing So Californians a bone anyway ... "Yeah yeah, we're considering you too."
