Also, it's been said you need another puck mover. Do you think Kaberle is on the radar? And if so, what do you think is fair value?
If no Lecavalier, we are still ok with Koivu Plekanec Lang Lapierre..

Kaberle is a nice puckmover but we need someone able to take shots on the PP, something Kaberle isnt the best at.. JayBo would be the better option IMO.

I agree that a puck-moving defenceman like J-Bo would make a positive impact. My question is this: At the expense of whom? Earlier this season, we all agreed that we had three top-four D, and a bunch of 5-6s. However, since Komi got hurt, and Gorges stepped up big-time, I believe he has established himself as a legitimate number 4. He's logging 20+ minutes a game and is leading the team in +/- at +15, which also ties him at 7th in +/- amongst all defencemen. I am not suggesting that J-Bo wouldn't be an offensive upgrade, but at what cost? Georges would clearly become the premier bottom-pairing defenceman in the league (can there be such a thing?), but it would be a lot cheaper to get a lesser light to replace Breezer directly and keep Georges with Hammer. I know we need a greater threat at the point, particularly on the PP; a specialist a la Streit would be ideal. Is there a forward who can man the point on the the PP? Skost didn't seem to click. Anyway, those are my rambling ideas I use to not think about Vincent...

Christensen, Armstrong, Esposito and a 1st (which became Daulton Leveille) for Hossa and Dupuis was the deal.

And despite Pierre McGuire blasting that deal basically every day on the radio, it really wasn't much of a risk for Pittsburgh, IMO. Christensen is a shootout specialist, nothing more. Armstrong is a heart and soul 3rd line grinder, Esposito is still not a lock to be a top 6 forward in the NHL and a 29th overall pick isn't a lock to be anything.
I'll agree that Christensen and Armstrong haven't turned into anything spectacular, yet anyway. But makes you wonder if that trade and the current situation of the Pens are related. Could just be other players having a bad year though.

I just want an upgrade from Brisebois on the right side. A guy that's solid and reliable. Preferably one that brings more toughness and physicality. Boynton would be a very nice fit if Florida tanks and not very expensive.

Lecavalier would be a long term acquisition. He's just a very good player who happens to seem available, and who has strong connections with Montreal. The scope of his impact in Montreal cannot be measured in term of our current needs, but in the long-term health of the franchise. Gainey interest in him has nothing to do with helping the habs in this year cup run, it is about helping the habs in the next 10 years.

This is completely different from the discussions regarding Gainey acquiring a 4th defenseman because he can't find one in his farm. That's purely a short-term consideration, because we have plenty of prospects with 4th D potential and it doesn't make any sense for us to get our hands on a big UFA and have to sign him long term. With Komi's contract at our door, we can't afford spending more on our blueliners.

That's why I just don't believe in Gainey getting J-Bo. His trade value is too high, and the team who will pay for him will likely wants to sign him long term afterward, something we can't really do unless one of our big three goes.

If Gainey go after another defenseman (and again, I stress it's not a "one or the other" situation with Lecavalier, they are completely different concerns), it will most likely be for a cheap vet we will have no hope nor interest in signing back. A true rental.

Every team is missing something, its what you do with what you got that makes you win cups.

Cap-wise, Montreal is in no situation to deal for an impact player unless it seems to be a great deal (a la Lang for a second, or Kovalev for Budaj and a 2nd). I wouldn't expect any major signings/trades done by the Canadiens until June.

I would have loved Shanahan here, but too late.

Marek Malik or Andy Sutton could be an option on the 3rd pairing for the playoffs and would come cheap.

Jay Bouwmeester would be nice but might cost a lot to get.

I would not mind having a guy like Keith Tkachuk, Mark Recchi or Darcy Tucker for the playoffs.

He'd be a great pickup but Phoenix is in a playoff race and they don't have enough depth on D that would allow them to trade him.

Absolutely, he's a very underrated defenseman and his contract is fantastic. Unfortunately like Andrei Kosteegin said, our chances of getting him are slim. Unless Phoenix drops big time in the standings.

Well if a playoff race can't make teams trade players, why are we discussing Bouwmeester? Florida is still 1 point from the 8th seed. As far as I'm concerned, they're not so deep on D as well.

And actually right now we should stop discussing trades 'cause everybody is still in it minus 4 or 5 teams and the majority being in our conference.

I understand that Michalek is racking some big time minutes and all, still we could make them a great deal out of it, and then they could make other deals to get a d-man back for them as well.

We could include O'Byrne and the infamous Higgins in a trade involving Michalek...

Bouwmeester will be expensive, so will Kaberle.
We need a 4th D with a nice shot for the PP, these guys are top 2Ds, not 4.

Don't get me wrong..if we could get them at a reasonable price..a prospect or two..with some picks..im all for it, but I doubt that's going to be the price.

If we go to trade now with teams that are close to be out of the race...I just see the Kings.....and the long contract of Tom Pressing.

Michalek leads the league in block shots with 154.
With him, Montreal would have 4 players in the top 10 in the league for block shots.

Honestly, with the way that the Panthers have picked up their play. IMO any talk of obtaining him should be put on the back burner until much closer to the trade deadline. If Florida looks like they could grab a playoff spot, I doubt Bouwmeester will be traded.

As for the O'Byrne/Higgins for Michalek proposal. I think that would be beneficial to both teams.

Actually zanon is a realistic pick-up, but he can't really move the puck. How about Kevin Klein. He's young, but from what I saw he could move it alright.

I was reading the Assets and Flaws section on him and chuckled as I realized that at age 38, Patrice Brisebois could receive the same comments!
