I'm pretty sure your friend is correct. I seem to recall that teams used to have their own skills competitions (some still do) and the winners of those competitions came to the ASG to compete in the skills competition there even if they weren't playing in the game itself.
If I can find a reference I'll edit this post but for now I'm going on memory.
You should ask this in the History of Hockey board. For sure someone there would remember.
I am not sure you guys have heard, but Tim THomas traded FOR Kovalev in the skills competition, he wanted to be the goalkeeper when it was Kovalev's turn.
WHen asked why, he said Kovalev was his brother's and his father's favorite NHL player.
I know I shouldn't say that......but I just like Tim Thomas the guy. His history and just the way he handles himself and the passion he brings to the game is incredible. He is a model as far as patience and determination are concerned.
Akward moment of the day...Chantal interviewing Ovy......
Other note...Price and Setoguchi seems to be friends.....we need to find a way to get him over here...

I was watching RDS so you mean when Lundqvist was interviewd on NHL Network? By this he meant if there was so many people everytime? Funny.
Yeah, he was interviewed on NHL Network and he asked the interviewer if this is how Montreal always practices, meaning are there always this many people. It was hillarious.
Also another funny moment was when Ovechkin was tripped by Thomas, 5 minutes later he gets interviewed on NHL network and gets asked if he is ok .. Ovechkin answers "Don't worry about me" lmao.. I love that kid.
Which is the shootout competition where there's gonna be voting and texting going on?
Is it the elimination shootout? Because the elimination shootout has everyone competing in it, even Komisarek?
It's the shootout competition where there's only 5 guys that participate including Kovalev...be ready for a big injustice to occur if Kovalev is named the winner...again, Habs fans with their illegal votes...
Watching the practice really showed me how much I hate the Bruins team. Seeing the interviews with Chara and Savard in their All-Star jerseys, I couldn't help but think that they were awesome, humble guys. However, if there were wearing their Bruins jerseys, I probably would have been cursing their names no matter what they were saying. It's funny how that black and gold jersey affects my perspective.
Then again, the all-star game is usually a place for offensive flash and flourish. While Komisarek will take part in the hardest-shot skills competition -- he said he "definitely" has to beat the 97 MPH he had in the AHL skills competition years ago -- he understands that his best skill won't be on display in Sunday's All-Star Game: laying people out.
