Erie Otters' officials were hopeful defenseman Mitch Gaulton would rejoin the lineup after the Christmas break. But his return hinged on being medically cleared by New York Rangers' doctors on a trip to New York City during the holiday break. That trip didn't occur, Otters head trainer David Stickney said before tonight's game against Kitchener at Tullio Arena.

Schedule conflicts caused by the holidays kept Rangers' doctors re-evaluating Gaulton's surgically repaired left elbow. That trip should be scheduled soon, Stickney said. Gaulton's return, Stickney said, "depends on what the doctors in New York say."

If those doctors are happy with his progress at the six-month mark since undergoing reconstructive surgery in July, Stickney said, then they will set a timetable for Gaulton's return.

For now, Gaulton practices with the team, but still hasn't been cleared for contact. He hasn't played a game this season. He missed most of last season after dislocating his elbow in October 2007.

16 points in Stephs last 17 games? Really? Wow. At the NCAA level for a freshman those are unbelievable numbers.

3rd among rookies in the entire NCAA, not just his division in the WCHL.

How is Hagelin doing? I heard he is alright on a crappy team.

Wow, is anyone else here super excited for this draft class?

I feel like del zotto, stepan, grachev and kundratek could become either very solid or difference makers at the NHL level.

Same. Also I hope Stepan does well. I played against him a few times he was soooo good.

Oh yeah. Honestly, since I go mostly on what I can find in print on the internet, I didn't have that much hope for Kundratek at first, but with what Prospect Park has been saying about him for the last couple of months and then his performance here, I must add him to my list.

Honestly, I'm excited for everyone we drafted this year except for Weise (which is funny since he's the only one playing pro hockey right now). Doyle is leading all of our prospects in scoring (and plays physical and fights too), despite playing on a GAWDAWFUL team and Gaulton was actually drafted in the OHL draft ahead of several Dmen who then went in the first round this past summer.

This is pretty much the direct opposite of my excitement for the previous year's draft where the only guys I liked were Cherry (sigh) and Hagelin.

He's playing very well on a disappointing (but not crappy) Michigan squad. He gets solid minutes and a lot of time on the PP. When you watch him play, you can see top-end talent (IMO). He has 5 goals, 10 assist in 20 games on the season.

I want NYR to draft Zack Kassian in '09. He's being billed as a more skilled version of Milan Lucic.

Kassian will likely go between 8-15, IMO. We'll have to fall in the standings or swing a trade to have a shot at him.

I'd like Hagelin to develop into a Pominville with more "oomph".

We're well over 1000 posts now. I'd like to cut and paste the last "X posts" or the previous "x days" into the new thread. How far back should we go?
