Good for him. He needs to use his long reach and size to force opponents to the outside. Then he should be real effective.

That's my opinion..

I don't think people are truly shopping around just yet. Maybe inquiring about players possibly being involved in a trade, but not as far as showcasing some players.
Maybe I'm wrong though..
I agree with this. I don't think Gainey will "showcase" anyone. NHL scouts are pretty aware of players these days and so far the Habs have been very patienet with their prospects - not unless something is imminent will there be reason to wonder and by that time it will be too late.

The only constant is.... our GM never telegraphs his moves. I think he's still going to seek out that experienced rental D-man but somehow I'll be surprised if O'Byrne goes the other way. Weber is not ready, Carle nope, PK Subban & McD still a road ahead.... O'B is the only short-term available guy (for next year, say) - and I'm sure the team's direction is focused on more than 1 Cup run.... more like 3 or 4 in a row.

Glad to see Ryan back, I'll bet he's loaded for bear !

You're allowed to have 23 on your active roster, which is what the Habs have - where's the issue:

Goalies (2) - Price/Halak

D-men (7) - Markov/Komisarek/Hamrlik/Gorges/Bouillon/O'Byrne/Brisebois

Forwards (14) - Koivu/Higgins/D'Agostini, Plekanec/Kovalev/Pacioretty, Lang/A Kost/S Kost, Lapierre/Lats/Kostopoulos, Begin and Laraque

IR (2) - Tanguay, Dandenault

The Habs don't have to send anyone down until the guys on IR come back, and that won't be for a while yet.

I'm glad we can count on you to bring some wisdom and reason to this lowly place.

Yeah, your right. For some reason, with Higgins getting the green light, I thought we would have 1 to many..

It would be nice if he could step it up, we need another physical presence back there, especially against the 2 Florida teams that both like to crash and bang.

I think the key for him is a bit more focus, he seems to play well for 19 shifts, then make a gaffe in the 20th and have everybody looking for him to be cut/traded. That being said, fans need to be patient, he is a guy that can be a top 4 d-man and very valuable player in the same mold as Komisarek in a couple years. He's not as physical but should be a better puck mover.

Unless I missed it, Chipchura and Stewart were on the roster, which is where people likely thought we had too many.

I can definitely see a trade happening shortly. I dont think Bob wants to wait until the trade deadline because he would want that player, or players to gel with the team. It took awhile for Lang, but he is playing very well. We need size and energy up front; and a solid defenseman similar to the Brad Stuart need of the Wings last year. We need a guy like Ian Laperierre and a defense like Derek Morris.

I think there will be a deal later this week...hopeful, and just a hunch. It gives BG 5-6 weeks to evaluate what he has done, and what he needs to do, until the trade deadline...again, just a hunch...

Are you telling me O'Byrne played 14 games in 14 nights?

He was down for almost a month.

I agree with this, especially since he's prone to mistakes when he plays the puck. But for me what O'Byrne most needs to do is put as much force as he can into those clean chances to contact he gets, especially when he's pinning people to the boards. He needs to establish a comfort zone that puts the pressure on the forwards trying to get past him, he's not trying to do anything but, as le sean says, force them outside and then, when it's available, try and punish them with your size and decent speed. It's the latter that will make him succeed in the league, and he's shown it before. In fact before the NHL he showed it consistently.

He's not a Komisarek open-ice beast, but when he happens to have someone on the boards, clean of course, he needs to punish them as much as he can, every time he can.

Happy to hear he has another shot. Last time he was playing everything was going bad for him. Now witha ll the healthy d we have his ice time will be lower until he can find his groove.
