Yes, but premeditated and unprovoked versus heat of the action retaliation makes a difference. A mitigating factor is still a mitigating factor.

That was a very stupid thing to do.

That aside, and now that he's been suspended for the rest of the season, could he drop school and get signed by the habs and sent in the East Coast? He could probably handle the physical aspect, and he won't miss half a season...

He should not have done that, but it is nice to know that the Habs finally have someone insane in their system.

Conboy & tropp
Suspension for the season for both but hopefully banned from professional hockey for Tropp.

I like the physical play and even the violence that comes with the sport sometimes but this is just dirty. Someone needs to clean this crap up.

I agree wtih you that Conboy's sucker punch was bad, but there are many, many people on this board and others who are, believe it or not, calling for the elimination of the penalty for INSTIGATING.

According to these mental giants, players Like Andrew Conboy have an important role to play in minimizing "cheap hits" in our game.

And if you don't think that Kampfer's hit was cheap, you are missing the point. Conboy did!

Compared to the Perezhogin incident, this new one is much worse, because if I recall correctly, Perezhogin was reacting to a perhaps equally vicious, improper attack on HIMSELF. And his reaction was immediate, he did not chase the player first and swing the stick at him AFTER he was already knocked down by a teammate. Yes, Perezhogin did swing too hard, but he was not acting as a vigilante but arguably in self-defense. Ill-advised, but not the same as the Bertuzzi or Conboy acts.

Your approach is seriously misguided. You are optimistically only thinking of the few cases where gang-like bahaviour does some good, but 95% of the time, it contributes greatly to MORE injustice and mayhem, just as it did in this incident in Michigan.

There is absolutely NO NEED for players on the ice to avenge hits like Kampfer's on Tropp. If the league thinks the hit was a discipline matter, it has the power to do something after the game.

I don't even know how stupid it was. What are you supposed to do, wait and see if he comes at you again?? Phone the attacker's mother right away, and get her to instantly scold her son?

If someone took a swing at my head, I can't confidently say that I wouldn't react, and I'm an anti-violence guy in general.

Way to much focus on Conboy here. The guy is wearing a full cage. A sucker punch is a sucker punch no doubt but did the punch do the damage or was it the slash to the neck. My money is on the slash to the neck. Appears as though Tropp's act is being slightly overlooked even though it was a way bigger disgrace.

First I thought:"wow this is awful".

Second when I heard they were Habs players I thought:"what do you know players from this organisation with a mean streak". I seriously have never seen that since Claude Lemieux, Patrick Roy and Chelios. You know around the time we won Stanley Cup. Just sayin'...

It's one thing to wish that our players were a bit tougher. I do, too.

But tougher can also mean the willingness to TAKE a hit but make the play, not going apes**t over a teammate getting bodychecked.

If every time a Habs player gets bodychecked, two guys lose their heads and do something so stupid they are thrown out for the year, how long do you think the team could contend for the Cup?

And don't tell me that the "mean streak" guys on our team would prevent other teams from bodychecking our players! I mean, honestly, would you tolerate that kind of cowardice in our own players?

Do you want a team full of stick swingers and sucker punchers but who are afraid to bodycheck because the other team has nutcases too?

Your first reaction was right: "wow, this is awful".

It s*** to see an incident like this. I really think Conboy has a chance to be an NHL player, and a good enforcer, but he needs to have some respect and know there is a line that he must not cross.
I don't agree. I would not see Gainey mess with his development by having him sit that long. If he is suspended for the remainder of the season, which I doubt, I see him in the AHL.
