OT: Player Contracts

Maybe this should be in the "non team specific" portion of the Forum.

Due to the Economy there is talk that the Cap is going to be lowered next season. The Sharks are pretty much right against the Cap. If the Cap is lowered would we have to move players or can we re-negotiate current contracts?

For you Contract Guru's out there: Is there any way to re-do a players contract during the contract period? For example; If Joe wants to see some of his team mates stay could he approach the head office and offer to take pay cut?

I know, it sounds silly but it is something that has come up in conversationa few times with some buddies.

Thanks......

New CBA prohibits renegotiation of deals.

However, the Sharks are sitting pretty good WRT $$ pledged for upcoming seasons.

Cap for 2009-2010 is expected to be "close" to the $56.7m cap this year as a lot of the HRR is already "in" for this season. Perhaps $1-2m less?

However, the cap for 2010-2011 is expected to have a significant drop as sponsorships are not renewed, etc. I've seen estimates from $5m (~10%) to $10m (~20%) less.

Also, some pundits are estimating that players may have to pay in 25% of their salaries into escrow for 2009-2010.

(http://hcky.info/ then go to "contract count" and check out the bottom half for list of contracts expiring in June)

Sharks are sitting well as *23* of the 44 NHL active contracts (plus 5 AHL deals) are expiring. 9 of those (plus McLaren) are NHL players. I would assume that any UFAs re-signed would be at a (significant?) discount from what they're being paid now (except for Boucher, should the Sharks retain him).

Perhaps Scott Niedermayer will be available by the trade deadline and/or available to sign in the summer.
