Lidstrom rule FTW. Detroit is ridiculous. Now they're gonna get Franzen to sign for like $3.2m. Hossa will still have to leave though.

Must be nice to have your captain for the 10 years after Lidstrom retires locked up.

Zetterberg obviously values staying in a winning organization.

Great deal for the Red Wings even with the long contract.

I love all the "steals" here. Meanwhile, NYI have a goaltender recovery from surgery in year 2 of a 15 year deal - a deal that makes him a NYI'er until he is 40.

Right now, the media/fans laugh at that deal. I hardly see how this is 'better.' Better player? sure. However, the length and term of the deal + the inherent risk of injury is the real issue here.

Good luck, but this is no steal kids.

That is why you don't let those types of players hit the open market.

The cap hit is the same up till 40. That's a loooooong contract. Steal right now, but that cap hit won't look nice by the end.

If you really would have had to possibly pay him say 9 Mill a year over say a 6 year contract....what is the big deal in paying him that extra 3 million a year x 6 years=18 Million you saved up front on cap hit and pay him that over the last 6 years? Sure big cap hit for a 38, 39 and 40 year old...but what the hell is 3 years of overpayment when you get him at a steal from ages 28 to 35ish...and you can sign other players and make a run at your 5th, 6th, 7th Stanley Cup in the coming years in just under 2 decades.

Zetterberg is a Wing for life and a steal for the next 5+ years.

Just goes to show why Ken is one of the best in the business.

Phenomenal cap hit, but committing to a player, and a player committing to a team until the age of 40? Seems shortsighted.

I think if the Wings have a steal for 8 out of 12 years thats pretty good.

Its official, when Zetterberg drives south on 75 to work, the value of the city of detroit doubles.

That is an unreal contract.

Paying him 1mil for the final 2 years of his contract, with a cap hit of 6mil is a steal.

6mil for him, when he would get 9-10 on the open market says it all folks.

Ken Holland

Z gets the money/term he wants. Detroit gets the cap hit he wants. Everybody wins, except the 29 other teams. Detroit = teh win.

As long as Zetterberg can stay healthy, this is going to be one heck of a deal for the Red Wings. $6 million is a great cap hit for a world class player like him.

He wouldn't take only 6 million unless he was going to get a long term contract. He got his term, the red wings got him got at only 6 million everyone should be happy.

It's a long deal, and considering Zetterberg has had injury problems in the past, it's quite a risk for 12 years, but money-wise it is a steal for such a great player.

I wonder if this mean the Sedins might be willing to sign a 6-8 year deal worth 5 million per season??

Zetterberg should be producing at PPG into his late 30s, but then again, anything can happen... I can guarantee the contract is heavily front-loaded. I wonder if there is an NTC?

Congrats to the Wings. No one knows whether the cap is in a different, much more lofty territory come the second half of his contract, and for the first half of it, the annual salary is an absolute steal compared to his on ice value.

There's obviously quite a lot of risk there too, but then Detroit has a team now that makes Holland commit to winning in the here and now.
