Flyers - Wild

To Flyers: N Backstrom (assuming he doesn't want to stay in Minnesota and resigns in Phila.)

To Wild: Lupul, Jones, Nodl, 1st '09

If the Flyers could lock up Backstrom up for say 20-24mil/4yrs and take a good goalie prospect in the draft it could solve problems between the pipes for many, many years.

The Wild get depth and a replacement for Gaborik -- not the best replacement, but a top six guy who dresses for 80-90% of the games if no one falls on his head.

Overpayment. That is a huge package to send for a goalie, even if the 1st is conditional.

A rare trade proposal that's a "NO!" from both sides.

as a wild fan id love that return...but something more likely would be just lupul and a 1st but it all depends on Backstrom signing long term too. If they wild are serious about trading Backstrom I think they'll be looking for a first rounder, as we dont have a 2nd or a 3rd this year. Other than that we need a little bit more offensive help

Jones is the only useless piece here. Lupul would easily be a top six forward for the Wild, and Nodl would be a better offensive prospect then anybody else in their system.

It's overpayment by Philly but I think there's potential for a deal around some combination of those pieces...

i doubt wed get a stud goaltending prospect in the 3rd rd. flyers holding on to that 1st rd pick is crucial

if they want a good goalie prospect they should trade for one cause they sure cant draft him.

and there's NO WAY I give up that much for a goalie like Backstrom, especially if they could just walk after FA.

Really though, is Backstrom that much of an upgrade over Biron? Someone posted their numbers on here and Backstrom's numbers are similar to Biron's and Backstrom plays behind a strict defensive system. Maybe, just maybe that defensive system covers up Backstrom's flaws more than we know. As for Biron, he's put up similar numbers playing behind a more offensive-oriented system.

I just don't see a move for Backstrom being an upgrade. If anything, it's a lateral move.

Biron would be a very solid goalie with better numbers if he wouldnt allow a weak goal every game and make stickhandling errors. Backstrom doesnt have mental lapses from the games ive watched.

As I've posted before, I think Harding would be a better fit for the Flyers than Backstrom.

Backstrom
Strengths: One of the best, if not the best, positional goalie in the NHL today. 99 percent of the time he is in the right position and if he isn't, he's cat-like quick across the crease. Plays a simple, no-nonsense game.
Weakness: He's not a brick-wall on straight up shots. Lasers from snipers are his weakness. Some rebound issues.

Harding
Strengths: Very athletic. Quick legs and arms. Can make the highlight saves. Great rebound control. If he sees the shot, he usually makes the saves.
Weakness: Isn't always in the correct position. Needs to learn to see through traffic better.

Us Wild fans make jokes how Harding and Backstrom would be the perfect goalie if we could merge them, as they are kind of opposites in their strengths and weaknesses.

Biron has big rebound control issues as well.

well, what of the flyers would pry harding away? lupul and nitty/biron? the flyers have to shave some salary and definitely need to move a tender the other way.

Lupul for Harding seems pretty even and if we send a goalie back even thou its a salary dump wouldnt something have to come back?? Clutterbuck possibly?? if we move Giroux up with Carter i think Clutterbuck and Upshall together would be real nice.

Clutterbuck is not a possibility. That kid is an animal and he is not going anywhere.

The OP's deal seemed pretty fair to me, assuming the flyers were confident that Backstrom would resign. If anything I'd be leaning towards no from Minnesota's side of the deal.
