Hal Gill at the deadline

I know Gill is a free agent in the summer and the Penguins certainly have enough defensemen on their roster that no matter where they are in the standings they could be moving a few. Gill seems to be one of them that has a good chance of being moved, although now sources are saying Whitney could be as well. What will teams in need of a defenseman to boost their blue line or fill in for an injury need to give up to aquire Gill at the deadline? Being a Sabres fan and having three of our top 6 out currently and their returns are up in the air for the time being, I'm interested in Gill. He's a big body that brings defensive physicality and IMO could be useful as a top 6 maybe top 4 dman.

I would not be surprised if Dallas made a run at him...the question is what would they want in return? 3rd or 4th round pick?

They don't have a lot of defensive defencemen though. I'd be a bit surprised if he got dealt because of that.

He sucks on ES but he is important to the pens pk. If hes dealt it would be for a tough guy that can chip in a few goals around the net- ala Chris Neil type. Pens don't want a pick..

He was actually great for the Pens after the deadline and in the playoffs. His play admittedly has fallen off this year, but I think he still has more worth to the Pens than what his return would be.

I don't think it's worth it to the Penguins to trade him.

He's really good on the PK, and can be very effective with the right matchup at even strength (used to do a great job on Jagr). But can definitely be exposed by speed at times.

Leafs got a 2nd and 5th for him...

If the pens can get anything for him they should take it an run. He is vastly overrated by fans of this team. He is slow, and NOT physical. He has one of the lowest hits per game ratio's on the team and doesnt block as many shots. He is pretty much usless in a puck moving role so basically I would be content to just get rid of his salary and the temptation of using him instead of sitting Goligoski which for some reason our glorious coach loves to do.

Hall Gill can be had.... if the Pens look like a long shot at the deadline.
We paid a 2nd and 5th for him, and whereas it looked tremendously steep at the time, it actually looked worth it last season.

Any functional team that needs a big PK presence who is otherwise a decent 3rd pairing defender will be glad to get Gill.
We'll look to get the 2nd back but will likely take a 3rd if that's the best offer. Again - it will only happen if we suck over the next month.

Gill is coming off a good playoff run, which makes him pretty valuable to teams hoping to make a run this year. He is great on the pk and in a shutdown roll. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a 2nd, maybe more.

Well there is Orpik, Scuderi and Eaton on top of Gill for defensive defensemen and Letang isn't that bad defensively as well. The team is going to try to look to get something in return for one of those guys and I would put Eaton ahead of Gill in terms of guys I would want to see Shero trade.

As for Whitney...screw the "sources" that think he is going to get moved. Ray Shero doesn't give the media anything so the sources are outside of Pittsburgh, they are just trying to drum up some rumors to spice up the deadline that is approaching and the fact that the Pens are in a playoff race. The Pens would probably move Goligoski before they move Whitney who has proven he can be a solid pp qb when healthy and he is under contract for a very good price long term.

As for Gill, he's probably worth a 4th rounder, but at the deadline if a team is desperate enough to bolster their depth on defense, he could go for a 2nd or 3rd rounder which wouldn't be too bad. If Shero can get a 3rd and a 4th, even better, he can take more risk picks in the later part of the draft.

Yeah I think they moved that 5th for Hollweg. They should have kept that 5th.

I don't see any reason why he shouldn't get a 2nd at the very least. His value hasn't gone down from last year has it?

Hall gill was a member of the worst penalty killing team in the league last year(Tor). I can't believe that people still regard him as a good penalty killer.

Bad argument.

Rick Nash is a member of the CBJ, who have the worst powerplay in the league.

Does that mean Nash isn't a good weapon on the PP?

I think Gill still holds value. The times he gets exposed is when he is on the ice too much. He is a 4 defenseman at best, but can be highly effective in a 5-6 spot along with playing PK.
