Captain Koivu & Captain Kovalev...who's the the real leader?

Since Koivu has come back from his injury....we have been badly beaten.....Why?

Is there a leadership issue?....
Captain Koivu or Captain Kovalev?...who's the real leader?....
who ever is the leader they're not doing a very good job leading our young team...

I think we don't really have a clear cut captain who can put fire under our team and that is the real problem....

Maybe there is a power struggle between Koivu & Kovalev?....they both want to be captains and leaders....so who is the real voice in the dressing room for the young guys?

I think we are missing a leading voice...

If we had a clear cut leader who all our players respected and followed we would not be playing with such lack of character and determination to win. We would be alot more consistant every game.

Gainey and Carb need to quickly evaluate our teams leadership and captaincy and make the necessary moves to address the issue.

What do you guys think?....Do we have a leadership issue?.....Do me have strong leadership?.....Do we have a number 1 leader that is respected and can lead this team during highs and lows?

Is there a team chemistry issue?....

simple as that: Koivu gives the example on and off the ice, he is the captain

Kovalev don't give AT ALL the example on ice, he's not, no matter what fanboys can say

We have leaders, Kovalev and Koivu. Koivu is our captain always has been, Kovalev filled in fine for him and yes he is a veteran leader but he along with the team are aware that Koivu is our leader, we lost some games.. **** happens. Everyone looks up to Koivu.

IT'S A FREAKIN LETTER ON A JERSEY!

They're both our leaders, in fact,

Koivu, Kovalev, Komisarek, Markov, Higgins and to some extent Hamrlik and Lang are our leaders

It doesn't matter who wears the letter, because someone HAS to, but it's more symbolic than anything.

I find it a load of bull**** when people say that Kovalev plays different when he has a letter or that Koivu taking the "c" back makes a difference

Do people even realize how silly that sounds?

EVERY NHL team has a group of 5,6,7 players who are the leaders

Detroit lost their last four games too. I wonder who is challenging Lidstrom for captaincy.

Habs never made pass the second round since Koivu is the captain for over 10 years.
Habs start losing since the return of Koivu.
Kovalev plays better with the ''C''.
Kovalev is the MVP at the ASG wearing the ''C''.

'Nuff said.

Thats what you want to hear right Jean Pagé?

My belief is that we have separation on the club between the Russians/Belarusians and the N Americans. Russians are GENERALLY a different type of people....I know, I was in a 5 year long relationship with one and have many Russian friends. So this is in no way bigotted. Hell, I'm Greek...and we Greeks have our own set of unique idiosyncrasies .

They need their ego stroked and don't take criticism too well. It hurts their feelings and if their feelings are hurt, they mope. So it's a real battle trying to motivate them. Now if there is only one or 2 on the team...it's easier to manage...but with 3 or 4, I can see a group rebellion scenario that can have a devastating effect on team chemistry.

for the last ****ing time, just because kovy can dangle doesn't make him a leader. ever notice that whoever plays on his line goes on a slump? have you ever seen him go into the corner and battle for the puck? leader my ass.

Koivu. No question. They are both leaders though.

Well, if there's really an issue between those two guys I would say NONE of them.

Anyway, here's my take.

Komisarek is the vocal leader.

Koivu is the respected always playing 110% on-ice, effort leader.

Kovalev is the talented flying player that get his teammate confident when he gets going.

Price & Markov are those leaders who's quality of play makes the most difference between a win or a assbeating.

It's a freaking letter. If not having the C makes Kovalev less of a leader, then I doubt he was much of one to begin with.

Was it not koivu who said when he went down for injury a while ago that they NEEDED a captain on the ice, someone else to actually wear the C. Therefore I do not think you guys have a power struggle, if not for koivu kovalev would only have an A when koivu is out. That said I think koivu is going to minisota sooner rather than later and kovalev will take over. he's done a fine job

There is no captain Kovalev. Koivu is captain.

You can be a leader without being captain, which Kovalev is. We have many leaders on the team. However, Saku is our "real leader" and our captain.

Shesh some of you guys are making this seem like a soap opera.

Hard when you're in the pressbox, but he's come back from injury, 2 points in last 3 games playing less minutes. His playoff performance last year(with an injured foot) speak for themselves. I've seen him motivate the team before, but I think the only thing is, he's too much of a nice guy, he needs to put his foot down and single out players.

That's normal, because you are not on the ice or in the locker room to witness it...

I love how random people question his leadership when the closest they have been to Koivu is through a TV or a computer...

Koivu has been very mediocre as the on-ice captain. He does not "lead by example" like players like Yzerman, Sakic, Jagr even do. He never turns it up a notch to win the game.

Kovalev does, but he isn't the captain so there are conflicts.

I wouldn't be surprised if Koivu is not kept over the summer, his tenure here has been strickingly mediocre.

I guess you didn't watch him play before his injury or any playoff run for that matter.

should we blame coaching and management for our problems?
