Well first of all he has become a complete player. He's a very good defensive forward, has the skill to take over a game (ask Detroit), is a very good PKer and a team leader.

Not sure why anyone would want a guy like that

Srsly, y'all have a good chance at a reasonable future without trying to steal ours.

Its a bad trade for the Jackets and its a bad trade for the leafs.

We don't need to trade anymore picks (esp a top 5 pick) for a guy who's going to be an UFA in 2010.

Rick Nash won't help us now, maybe in 5 years. We need picks & the Jackets wouldn't make this trade anyway.

If the Jackets make the playoffs, i think he signs...if not he'll test the FA waters.

According to the Hot Stove (after hours) Rick Nash's agent is trying to talk him into testing the Free Agent Market, too see his value.

I think Nash's value will be something like this:

10 years at 95 mil, signed by Brian Burke & the Leafs!

Interesting position to take, yet you have posted many times that Antropv, who couldn't carry Nash's jock strap is worth a 1st in 09 and will be UFA at the end of this season.

From a PR perspective alone the Jackets would never do this trade or pretty much any other one involving Nash.

He is the face of the franchise in Columbus. With the team on the upswing, they are finally getting fans excited here again. Management would be crucified by the fans here if he was ever traded.

This trade never happens unless a pre-negotiated contract is worked out where Nash signs with the Leafs.

And the chances of that happening are Highly Highly Highly unlikely.

Certainly there are teams that have space and more can make space by then. All of that said, I do believe he will re-sign with Columbus.
I understand everyone has a salary cap. That doesn't mean everyone would or could offer the same amount to Rick Nash. He's worth far more to Columbus than he is to any other team, based on his on and off ice value to the franchise.

Plus with the likelihood of the cap flat lining this year and going down next year, Nash is in a better position to get maximum return from Columbus this summer rather than wait for the unknown next summer. I'm guessing Columbus will offer somewhere in the 10-12 year $70-$80 mil range for Nash. I just don't see too many teams lining up to throw that kind of offer at Rick Nash.

That's a horrible deal from Leaf perspective. Better to trade Kaberle for 1st + top prospect, use our top 10 pick in 2009 and restock our farm system. Those three prospects plus Schenn is a nice core to build a team around.

Even is Nash is unavailble in 2010, I'm sure there will be plenty of top end UFA talent available when we want to be competitive again, and we'll have more cap space than almost everybody soon.

I don't think we'll trade our whole team for ~37 goals.

What's wrong with the other Schenn? He doesn't have the media sexiness of a Tavares pick, but it's not as though he's a bad player - and besides, I'll bet the Schenn brothers could take the Kostitsyn brothers anytime.

Given the bottom 5 teams go into a draft lottery and all teams in that group of 5 have a chance at the #1 pick it is possible NYI finish last and still miss out on Tavares. The worst the could be was 2nd pick. Realistically any one of the worst 5 teams can get Tavares, although the % chance diminishes from 1st to 5th place in the lottery.

It is possible that Tor 1st in 09 could be the No 1 pick. With Filatov, Brassard, Mason, Voracek, and Russell all looking like the potential to serious contributors to the hockey club then Kaberle, Schenn and the 09 and 10 1sts from Toronto is something worth Howson at least considering.

Kaberle is solid, Schenn could be a top 4 guy a little way down the road, those top 1st round picks could be potential top 6 guys alongside our big 4 prospects, that 5-10 years of quality players and playoffs for years to come.

These LEafs fans are starting to be like KNicks fans. Apparently, every half decent FA is going to sign there.

THey'll still find a way to suck.

Well they've already set a precident with colossal signings like Niklas Hagman and Jeff Finger, who's to say they can't sign Nash, Kovalchuk and Jesus in 2010?

I know its a show but do you have a link to a video of this? First I've heard of anything remotely close to what your saying.

Regardless if he doesn't re-sign it won't be because of money. The Jackets will give him a very generous and fair offer... if he doesn't sign this summer it won't be because of money but other motivations.

If that is the case, he'll get dealt sometime next year.

That being said... I don't see Nash jumping ship just when it starting to finally set sail.

He's said all the right things about liking Columbus, but we never really know what a player thinks until that first contract is offered. I think he'll resign though, especially if Columbus makes the playoffs this year, or gets off to a hot start next year.
The guy you quoted has his sources. Seriously, he does. And yes, Nash doesn't really want to be in Toronto, too much media pressure. He likes walking down the street knowing that he won't get mobbed. I think we'll sign him for 7, maybe 8 years.

And the first trade sucks.
