As much as it's just a depth deal and is inconsequential, I like this a lot. Gets Brown out of here, and they at least get something back for him. Claiming McIver on waivers would have been pointless, but this is a pretty decent move. Moves out a guy who sucks in exchange for getting back a guy who was their ~8th defenseman going into the season.
I'd like to see Jaffray back up so that Hordichuk doesn't have to be dressed for every game. Jaffray - Johnson - Hansen would actually be a pretty useful line.
Good job by Gillis. You get one contract off the books and acquire an asset in McIver. I doubt McIver gets called up because of Davison and Nycholat already on the main roster but he'll help out in Manitoba.

A period and a half of Rypien would be fabulous, but is probably expecting too much.
Last night during the telecast, they showed a shot of Gillis up in the box, and he and Gilman appeared to be looking over some notes. At the time, I wondered if they were discussing a potential move.

Who is the next healthy scratch/5 mpg player that will become the whipping boy now? Cause those guys really need to be amazing hockey players, or Nucks fans aren't happy.

They wanted McIver for the Moose...had they picked him off waivers they'd have to re-waive him to get him down there.
Good move. Glad Brown is finally gone.
Not if I'm reading the CBA correctly:
Quote:
13.22 When a Club claims a player on Regular, Re-Entry, or Unconditional Waivers, and, subsequently, in the same season it requests Waivers on the same Player and the original owning Club is the successful and only Club making a Waiver claim, then the original owning Club shall be entitled to Loan such Player to a club in another league within thirty days without further Waivers being asked; provided that such player has not participated in ten or more NHL Games (cumulative) and remained on an NHL roster more than thirty days (cumulative) following such a successful claim.
So because the Canucks would have been the only team to put in a claim they could have sent him straight down to the Moose. They traded Mike Brown for him on the off chance that some other team would put in a claim for McIver so that they wouldn't be able to send him down without offering him to them first.

I like it. Gets Brown off the Canucks roster and gives Manitoba a very good AHL defensemen in McIver. And if the report of Jaffray being recalled is true, I like it even more. He was good in his NHL action this year and deserves to be up, IMO.
