How bad would it be for the NHL if the pens miss the playoffs?

the stanley cup finals hangover always seems to hit atleast one of the teams team, ottawa didnt make it last year, ducks got bounced in rd 1, year before the oilers/canes didnt fare any better, and the list goes on and on...

Who cares, aside from Pens fans? I mean, really. Don't be ridiculous. The league will be fine.

If anything, the league will be better off, because we'll have two months of the league, and Versus, and NBC, and the highlight shows, having to give more exposure to other star players and teams around the league.

Why would it be so terrible for the NHL, the Pens are just one team out of 30 and the game goes on.

Army was a great locker room guy, no doubt, but there's plenty of guys like him that bring the same kind of things. Max Talbot, Matt Cooke, Tyler Kennedy, etc.

Yeah, but that was last season, that season was already going and even though the trade happened the wheels where in motion and kept rolling along.

After a few months off it was time to get everyone back together and start up again. Without Armstrong they've never really been able to do that for any length of time.

Like I said I really don't following the Pens so this could be totally wrong. But from an outsiders point of view it something to question.

Yeah, the NHL should market Ray Whitney and Eric Staal, that's the way to go. Just like baseball markets their B-level stars like José Vidro or whoever.

Its not Armstrong per se. It is that pretty much everyone vocal with some kind of tenure has left within a year.
Recchi at the beginning of last season. Colby at the deadline. Malone (the real team chemistry blow I think), in the offseason along with Mr. Death Stare Roberts who at least made the kids know what it was all about.
Laraque has been replaced positionally but in terms of carachter I don't think Godard stacks up.
Add the killer in so many ways, that Gonchar has been out all season, and that's a whole lot of experience and character people to do without for a team where everyone important is otherwise very young. Talking about Colby as the glue.... its too easy, and I think just not meaningful never mind how he was certainly a good guy for the room.

The Pens certainly werent the reason that the Finals were one of the highest rated in recent years.

They didnt hurt, but the NHL would hurt more if a team like Detroit missed than they would if the Pens missed. I dont think really anyone outside of Pittsburgh really cares if the Penguins do or dont make the playoffs. I guess no one outside of Detroit cares if the Wings do either.

Baseball markets teams and rivalries. Yankees-Red Sox. Mets-Phillies. Cubs-Cardinals. Etc.

I can't think of any one player that MLB relies on so extensively as the NHL does with Crosby.

The NHL tries to make Crosby "the face of the league." Tell me, who is the face of MLB right now? There hasn't been any one baseball personality as dominant in the public consciousness since Barry Bonds (and that wasn't because of marketing, but because he was filthy cheater).

There's something wrong with the Penguins PP? But they have the best PP specialist in the league.

They'd still find a way to talk about Crosby, play the Crosby special before playoff games that he isn't taking part in, or whatever else Versus and NBC likes to do.

I was talking about Alexander Ovechkin, Mike Green, Milan Lucic, etc.

What does the NHL do exactly to market Crosby? Versus and NBC decide their content on their own, don't they? I don't think the NHL tells them "you're going to do a profile on Crosby". They do it with Crosby because that's how they think they can create a better product and get ratings, instead of using someone who doesn't speak English like Malkin, or an inferior player like Staal or Toews or Getzlaf.

My God can you get over yourselves? You have a great Organization. Things like this do not have to be said. As for this thread is stupid, no Pens' fan would start such a thing. I think it is probably another thread designed to draw slams to us to be honest.

No big deal.

This will finally give the NHL a reason to market the real star of their league...Ovechkin

the league will probablly set up cameras in lemieuxs living room and mario, sid and malkin will all have mics so they can offer up their opinions. between the first and second period, sid will give us a tour of marios house. the second intermission will feature coverage of the party/munchies spread that mario put out.

sounds idiotic i know, but i wouldnt put it past good ol' gary.

It would be great. NBC would have to show other teams for once.
