Nash and Staal on the same line? Wow.

I am not a Jacket fan btw
Overpayment by CBJ.

Brassard, Filatov, 1st '09 should be enough.

He's franchise.
Your facts are spot on. But that said, I can't shake the nagging feeling that he's just one of those players who will never be quite as good as he should be. He doesn't dominate consistently. He disappears from games a little too frequently to overlook.

He seems to me like one of those guys who you keep hoping will be a superstar, and keep paying like a superstar, but who never quite fills the role. Too good to get rid of, but not good enough to carry an organization.

At that salary for that # of years, I'm honestly not sure many teams would be interested in paying market value in trade assets, much less above market value, for his services.

I don't think we have the assets to get Staal.

Spezza for Staal straight up would be the only fair thing, I imagine. I wouldn't offer that though.

Otherwise, it's a collection of the same old crap.

prospect

which is crap value, really...

We can't give up that many prospects either cuz... we don't have many.

Dream on. I think a lot of people wouldn't do Kopitar for Staal straight up.

I think most people that say "his current bad season" only look at scoring stats. He is on a team that does not score many goals, has a horrible power play and with Maurice's system, scoring won't go up. He is playing on a line with Samsonov and Ruutu who are nice players..but nowhere near top line players. Heck..a year ago they were a 3rd liner and waived in Chicago.

That said, he still has 22 goals (of which 6 are GW) which accounts for 17% of his team's total. He is a +5 on a team that is a combined -82. He is really the only forward team's have to key on when playing the Canes so he has a battle every night.

Both Sedins on long term contract is not enough for Staal? 2 young 80 (or more) point players are not enough?

Agreed. Even though Staal is Great, Filatov, Brassard and a mid to late first rounder will amount to more then Staal.

It's all a matter of support on the team. Staal is a step above everyone on Carolina. His linemates are Samsonov (who can't seem to recall his Bruin days) and Ruutu (who's on pace for a career year playing with Staal).

Neither of which are top line players, in any definition you choose to go by. Like Gaborik, Nash, etc, he's just another star player that probably won't reach his full potential until he's got another player of equal talent to play with.

I dont think Staal is that much overrated.

He is franchise player, has had 100 point season, scored 45 goals, still young, plays fairly good defense, can play tough, important guy for their team, has won stanley cup and gold medal.

If you read those you understand how important he is to Carolina. And he will still get like 60-70 points this season considering its bad season for him.

No way. If Sens fans agree to take Fro+JJ+1st for Heatley, Staal will be considerably less.

Fro+1st 09.

No more.

Taking Gilbert out from that deal, it looks pretty fair.

I like Eric Staal, even though he can be a little hot and cold, but he's not worth both Brassard and Filatov, plus two first rounders.

Frankly, getting him out of Carolina would be tough. Sure, he is well paid, but it's for a reason. He is the key to the team's offense. Brind'Amour is in the twilight of his career and appears to be declining fast, unless it's simply hidden injuries this season. What Carolina would need on trading Staal is not futures or prospects. That wouldn't interest the Hurricanes. What they would seek is a first-line center with 80+ points in him, reliably, and 100 in a good year. The value of Staal to the Hurricanes is as high or higher than it would be for most other teams.
