John Tavares, Draft day

What do you guys think? Let's say NYI, day of the draft get the number one pick but want to trade it.

Would would it take to get John Tavares?

My proposal for the leafs assuming they get the number 5 pick

1st round pick 09
A prospect
Kaberle

Is this over payment? Or under payment? What do you guys think?

Underpayment IMO. Would probably cost you all that plus, the second rounder in the same draft year as well as another good roster player. Atleast that's what I would expect if someone were offering me for Tavares, especially if I am a team like the Islanders in which they have no other forwards to fall back on if they don't get him.

So you've finally realized that the Leafs won't finish in last place, good for you. What you've got there is underpayment. You'll probably need that + Stajan/Stempniak and 1st 2010.

As an Islanders fan, I'm pulling for Tavares more than anything. But if you guys are willing to give up, say:

2009 1st (Draft Matt Duchese)
2010 1st
Kaberle
Stajan
Kulemin

I'd take the deal without a moment's hesitation. I'd even throw in our 2nd and/or a guy like Sean Bergenheim to see the deal go through. Reminds me of the Lindros trade.

Take away Kulemin and the pick in '10 and I think you've got a fair deal. The Leaf's pick next year should be another top 10 so..

Leafs would not do that trade. Replace the 2010 first with a second of any year and take out klumenin

I don't know about the exacty value, because that is really going to depend on how much the Isles like guys they think are available at #5.

However, the premise for your deal is flawed. If the Isles trade for the pick, it won't be for Kaberle. The Isles already have a similar player in Streit, and a much lessor version in Campoli. They don't need offense-oriented nonphysical dmen.

the Isles, as a rebuiding team, would probably want prospects and picks.

I think a deal similar to the Schenn/Bailey stuff would make more sense - picks and prospects. The Leafs don't have a pick on the second round, but their may be prospects in the Toronto system that the Isles would want.

Anyway, kind of moot. If the Isles have a shot a Taveres, they will most likely take it.

Lmao, why are Leaf fans so damn greedy and overvalue their players? Do you really expect to get a future 50 goal scorer and a franchise player for 1 1st round pick, a #1 Defenseman which they already have, and maybe a 50 point player?

Too much return. Honestly, even without Kaberle, it is an overpayment for Toronto.

It would atleast take a 1st rounder this year, 1st rounder next year, top 10 prospect, and a young player who can help right away.

So Tavares for Duchese, Kaberle, Stajan and a 2nd?

Dude, you have to absolutely blow us away in order to get Tavares. We're not doing you any favors.

Replace Kulemin with Tlusty, maybe? I don't know much about the Leafs season, but 4 points in 14 games doesn't seem all that impressive.

I think people are overestimating the value of the first overall pick. There's no guarantee Tavares will produce at the NHL level as well as he has at the junior level. I think he'll kick ass, but I'll be surprised if he ends up being a consistent 100 point player. I'd say that about every player, though. You should never expect anyone to put up 100 points a year, though there are a handful of players in the NHL capable of it.

Schenn almost has to be involved if the Leafs want Tavares.

He's had a rough year. I'll hold off on the speculation until we see where those lottery balls end up.

Underpayment. While the isles do need defensive help, I think the rebuilding isles would prefer a youngster to grow and develop along with their top kids, 19 yr old Bailey and 20 yr old Okposo.

Supposedly the isles decided to trade down last yr,only after missing out on the top 3defenders.They wanted one of Doughty,Bogo or Pietranglo.Seeing how well Doughty has played as rookie, has to have them asking if Hedman could make such a smooth transition into the nhl.

I don't think so. Leafs have said the only untouchable player on the team is Schenn.

I was hoping to then trade Kaberle for another first round pick. Or keep him on the team. Injuries have shown you can never have enough great defensemen.

Ya, if Kaberle gets traded for a pick what could it bring? Number 6-10? Then it's looking like this for Tavares

Number 5 pick
Number 7 pick (assuming thats for Kaberle)

For Tavares

Doesn't that seem fair?
