But really, why risk trade a guy who you know is gonna be a defensive stud and be the cornerstone of your D and PP for years to come AND your 5th overall pick for Tavares and 2 second rounders?

Tavares would be nice, but he isn't necessary. Certainly he doesn't warrant trading our first and Schenn for him.

I didn't say Toronto would do it. The OP asked what it would take, and IMO, that is what would need to be involved. The Isles are a rebuilding team - the only way they move a young stud is if they are building in areas of need.

It all depends on how much Leaf fans want Tavares. Schenn's proven to be a fan favorite for the Leafs despite being the fourth defenseman taken, there's no reason you guys won't fall in love with a guy like Magnus Svensson-Paajarvi or Evander Kane.

If hfboards poster LeafsGetTavares wants to talk about his username coming to fruition, you guys are gonna have to overpay. The Islanders want Tavares badly, but anyone can be traded for the right package.

That's what I'm not understanding, I'd take MSP at #3 all day everyday if I was the Leafs.

The OP is kidding himself. Any player we end up with in the top 5 would be an excellent addition and is automatically our best prospect. Also the deal you proposed earlier was awful.

Doesn't that seem fair?

Kaberele is -12, and has a grand total of 4 goals. Good luck getting the 7th overall for him.

The ONLY way you are moving up in the draft is by surrendering young assets. I think it would probably have to be Schenn, but at the very least Tlusty and Kulmenin.

I'd be shocked if a lottery team gives up a 1st for 30 yr old Kaberle.

I'd rather have Tavares or Hedman with the isles 1st then 2 later first rounders. The nyi 2nd is like a late first. Then they'll have the Leafs 2nd.They have a good chance of picking up a kid in the 2nd who slips down out of the 1st round.

Just to make sure something is clear up front: Tavares is nowhere near the "sure thing superstar" that Lindros was and this "potential deal" should not be compared with what Lindros eventually fetched from Philadelphia.

You also have to understand the revenue increase when you get a player like Tavares

Biggest bust? He was the best player in the NHL for a while. It wasn't his fault he ran into concussion trouble.

Why bother trading for him if he is going to sign in Toronto when his contract is up anyways?

Have you seen how much he dominated before Scott Stevens did this to him?

I want Victor Hedman instead for the Sabres. He and Myers would be an imposing blueline.

Hmm 2 firsts, Enroth, and Brennan? I dunno...

The Isles are not trading the 1st overall pick, so keep dreaming Leafs fans. It would take a massive overpayment. Tavares is exactly what the Isles need, not only from a team perspective, but for the fan base as well. Trading it would be a horrible PR move.

But really, whoever has the first pick is looking for a wholesale rebuild, most likely.

Schenn is the only major piece to a rebuild that the Leafs have at the moment, along with their first.

To Tampa : 1st overall

To whoever: Steven Stamkos

Unlikely to happen, but would this be a fair trade at all?
