Hey, thanks for bringing up Malkin and knocking the topic off track.

I think the key there was "FANTASYLAND", people.

Put CMac on the top line, give Hecht more work on the PP, call up Zags and see what he got to show us. with any luck, Vanek will be back in 2 weeks with the fashionable blue jaw-guard from the house of Lafontaine. Maybe something a little haute couture!

That's pretty much where I'm at Newfie. A look at Zags has been long overdue.

why does everyone think we are calling someone up? Paille has been in the pressbox with Peters. There is no way Buffalo spends dough to look at someone else right now.

I want to see Zags as much as the next guy, but its not happening.

My bad, I'll try to talk about full cages, the Sedins, or full cages ON the Sedins for the remainder of the thread.

But seriously, back on topic. As long as Tim stays healthy, and Pominville or Kotalik can step up their game, I think we'll be fine for a few weeks, assuming the defense can continue to hold down the fort. As we start getting injured players back, we should be in good shape, and if we can make a deal or two at the deadline, great.

Is that whole dark line in the photo the laceration? Hopefully part of that is just blood and the actual laceration isn't that large. Gonna be a big, nasty, mean looking scar that's for sure.

Eastern European? Big nasty facial scar? Hmm...

Agreed, and if for whatever reason we do call someone up, it'd be Mancari, Gerbe or Kennedy before Zags IMO

Seat belts I agree, if you want to sail through the windshield on a head-on that should be your right. Gotta disagree on the cell/texting though, because it puts other people at more risk of being injured by your stupidity. The fireball deaths of high school cheerleaders from Rochester comes to mind.

The Sabres, meanwhile, have just taken the ice for the first time without Thomas Vanek. The big news so far is some new lines. Derek Roy is skating on the wing with Tim Connolly and Drew Stafford and that could make for one explosive top unit. Also on the ice are MacArthur-Hecht-Pominville, Kaleta-Ellis-Kotalik and Paille-Mair-Peters.
Roy on the wing?!?!?!

That's ummm interesting.

Not sure if it was TBN Blog or WGR, but it was pointed out he played wing with Drury in the playoffs a few years back and played wing for Team Canada over the Summer. I also remember when Vanek was benched for a shift or two against the Ducks that Lindy replaced him with Roy on that line. It could be fun, but without Roy, that second line seems destined to struggle.

Roy was taking shifts on Connolly's LW in the 3rd period of Sens game too. He also played on Chris Taylor's LW with the Amerks in the playoffs and was one of their best players.

Roy-Drury-Grier was an awesome line (until our favorite center met Mike Fisher)...

As far as the Malkin fantasies go, it just isn't going to happen. The only trade I can call to mind where teams shipped out players in the prime of their careers that were seemingly untradeable is when Ottawa shipped Hossa to ATL for Heatley, which is and has been about as even of a swap as possible. I can't think of any deal PIT would listen to for Malkin other than like a Kopitar + Brown + something type deal, but there's just zero reason to do it. If the Pens want to make the playoffs this year, I can't see them moving any young talent other than Letang or Staal.

But back to the real topic...I'm pegging March 4th vs Montreal as Vanek's triumphant return date. *fingers crossed*

If that top line stuggles for any amount of time, we're looking at some serious offensive deficiencies for the squad...

Agreed. We look too much like Ottawa with only one scoring line. I'd much rather put Pominville or even Kotalik up there and hope that one of them can start contributing offensively. If not, throw their ass in the press box or make a deal to ship one of them out.

With Goose and Vanek out, maybe this is a chance for Stafford to get some experience camped out in front of the net. He's got the size and hands for it.

That's my biggest concern.

I'd rather that they just plug Paille (or Mancari or Kennedy) in at LW on that top line and leave the other 3 lines alone.

I am glad Ruff is getting away from sprinkling talent throughout the lines. We need a legitimate scoring line and a hard-hitting energy-checking line (or whatever you want to call it). Everything else in between should develop independently. A shut down line featuring Hecht would be my next priority.
