This is from espn rumors:

Biron on the block
Martin Biron | Flyers
The Flyers are going to try to trade G Martin Biron, who can be an unrestricted free agent July 1, before the trade deadline, according to the Toronto Sun.

Biron had lost four consecutive games before starting Saturday against Boston, but he was pulled early and Antero Niittymaki picked up the victory.

i dont really see the point. if nitty is gonna be the guy (which i think is a dumb decision to make this early)...why would you wanna trade biron for nothing when he can be here to back nitty up if he gets hurt?

Toronto Sun blurb...

"Biron on his way out?
Quote:

Martin Biron's days with the Philadelphia Flyers may be numbered. His days as the club's starting goaltender appear to be over. Biron, whose contract (at $3.5 million per season) expires at season's end, had lost four straight games before starting Saturday against Boston at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston. In that game, Biron looked shaky, allowing the Bruins to jump ahead 3-1 on 15 shots. He was pulled for backup Antero Niittymaki, who stopped all 22 shots he faced in a 4-3 come-from-behind win for the Flyers. The word is, the Flyers are going to now try to ship Biron out before the trade deadline."

Yeah, because the Flyers sure could do with having just Niity and some AHL'ers as their only option in net.

I don't believe this unless they trade Biron + Lupul for a goalie or something.

Man, the distractions around this team are only going to worse before they get better.

When is the deadline again?

Biron and Lupul to Minny for Backstrom?

Im calling B.S. on this.

Nitty has proven in the past that he is not ready to shoulder the load with his concentration problems.

Why would Minny deal Backstrom for Biron without getting Lupul or something back?

Biron likes it here, I like him.

I doubt this happens, but if it does we need to get a capable back up for Nitty. I don't trust out AHL goalies to do that job.

Yea this seems like a pretty obnoxious rumor. The ONLY way this happens is to a team that has a young goalie who has completely outplayed the expected starter who is also somewhat young, but underachieving and on the end of a contract. The only teams that come to mind would be Columbus (trading for LeClaire, who is extremely injury prone and was amazing last year, but god awful this year) and LA (who has a plethora of good young goalies: Quick, Ersberg, Bernier, but no vetern to mentor them). The other teams with goalie issues are really Chicago and Minnisota. Chicago has two older goalies who are both playing well but are costly cap-wise(making one of them the clear starter and Biron the back-up), and Minnisota may or may not be able to keep Backstrom (making Harding the starter and Biron the back-up), but he, as well, would be costly cap-wise and player-wise.

The only other potential dance partner could be Tampa with both of their goalies on the shelf they might be willing to part with McKenna or Ramo OR they've soured on Smith and could let McKenna or Ramo take the starting role. But any of those three goalies will cost Biron, Lupul + to get and we'd probably need to take some garbage in return too.

To be fair, up until CNote posted the Toronto Sun article, I thought it was ********. After all, it was ESPN reporting on hockey.

Ill be honest, Biron will be going no where until maybe the offseason. There is no reason to trade him now. If Nitty starts to blow in playoffs (if he even starts playoffs), then we will need a real goalie backing him up.

Finally.

I've been a Nitty fan for years. He makes a tremendous amount of "big saves". While Biron has played well, especially in last years playoffs, Nitty is a better goalie and can steal a game. That's what is comes down to. While Biron can be solid, Nitty can steal games and get his team motivated with big saves.

I think it's time we let Nitty run with it in the playoffs. Of course, we need a good goalie for injury backup but I think Nitty would suffice. He has played extremely well in high stakes games for Finland but has never had the chance here. He's had the chance during the regular season and while he plays ok, he has some focus issues. I think with the playoffs, he would be very focussed and would do great things for this club.
