Thrashers say they won’t trade Kovalchuk

As a thrasher fan, can I request a moratorium of all opposing teams proposals involving Kovalchuk to be locked until at least 1 July 2009.

Good for Thrashers fans if true.

It's been said before though. Think about it. Why would you admit your looking to trade somebody? It just drives down the price for him.

I can't see him being traded, but the last line makes you wonder.

“I like everything here and my family loves the city,” he said. “I don’t want to go anywhere. But it’s a business and we’ll see what happens.”

Is he hinting that he could always get traded OR that he likes Atlanta and the Thrashers but deep down he knows they won't be good for awhile?

Can't really tell. Kovalchuk would look weird in another uniform.

I don't believe it. With Waddell, anything is possible.

I hope they resign him.

If they can't, then he should come to Toronto

Doesn't really matter if they won't trade him if he doesn't re-sign there as a UFA and to me, there is no chance in blazes he will resign with Atlanta. Atlanta is a very poor team and their GM is a moron. He needs to grow a brain and deal this guy off in the right package for the mother-load and start to build a real team.
Chicago would be the best fit I could think off.

So would Gagner, Horcoff and a 1st be enough?

Not even close. I like Gagner but you are talking about a guy on a good year that scores 40 to 50 goals with 85+ points. More likely something like Gagne,Cogliano and a first.

They won't trade him, at least before summer, but I honestly wonder whether the team and Kovalchuk himself would be better off parting ways. The thing is he is kind of high maintenance. Don't take this the wrong way, I am not questioning his dedication or anything like that, it is just the type of player he is.

When Kovy is on, he is IMO the best goal scorer in the game. When he is not on, he is still quite good, but the problem is Thrashers need him to score every night. In a deeper offencive team that wouldn't be a such problem.

And I don't know if I've seen him ever develop concistent chemistry with any player, for some reason even good linemates have problems keeping up with him and often are less efective as a result. He has an unique style, plays at very high level, and really isn't the best in utilizing his teammates, all three make him kind of difficult to play with. It is no accident that Savard, Kozlov, Heatley, Hossa, Little, etc. usually played in a different line.

I don't want to diss the guy, he is a great player and a clutch scorer. Take last years WHC final, it was Kovalchuk (after being pretty much invisible the whole tournament) that stepped up and scored in the final moments of the final game, not Ovechkin, Semin, etc. Goal scorers like that win you championships. But I just don't think that he is the kind of player you want to build a team around, and he would be better off in a team where he can be just a goal scorer, not the franchise.

Not really. While a lot of people needed to see it in the media that Kovalchuk wasn't being traded, there are a lot more people who knew he wasn't going to be.

I suspect once Atlanta solves ownership crisis, both Hawks and Thrashers will really get going. If that happens within next 2 years, I expect Kovy to re-sign.

I believe them. Without him, they would be one step closer to Las Vegas (or Southern Ontario or name your favorite relocation destination).

That means he'll be traded by March 4th

Court case starts in six days.

Ditto Lecavalier, Spezza and Malkin. Each going nowhere.

This news is common sense...and good for Thrasher fans.

You do not fantasy-trade 25 year old franchise forwards. You (re)build around them.

This is apparently a radical concept to a few here.
