WAY OT - but, if you guys could answer this stupid question...

Do you know what an iconoclast is? I mean, w/o looking it up, would you know the word? Or would you say its a bit obscure to ever really use.

I know its a weird request, but, a buddy an I have been having this slight debate/argument about it. I'll explain later.

Thanks, people

I think I looked that one up when Dennis Miller was doing Monday Night Football.... or maybe it was one of Mike Tyson's rants..

but seriously, I do not believe iconoclast is a word that a person with average/above average intellect would use in their everyday vocabulary. To be honest, (IMO) I tend to believe that people who throw obscure words around every chance they get seem too be attempting to prove their intellectual superiority, which is just a reflection of their own insecurity. (was that a run-on sentence?? ).****not referring to you or your friend, just in general.

Yeah, we were actually debating the use of the word somewhere in the title for an album name, whereas I began to believe it was just too obscure... and seemed kind of like... "****ery for the sake of ****ery".. i.e. trying too hard... like Dream Theater!

Thanks people.

You know a lot of people consider Jesus an iconoclast.

It's not an "obscure" word by any means.

That's true, but I dont think too many people understand the word. I've decided instead to go with "maverick", as its used at least a LITTLE more often... Top Gun, Dallas' NBA squad... all that.

Sure makes a good trivial pursuit question.

I've seen the brightest minds in the world come from community colleges and rural schools and the dimmest come from Ivy league schools.

Whenever I've hired people I always try to treat colleges like a draft position. The people with bigger name schools (or first round picks) will always catch my eye, but until I interview them, test them and kick the tires it's just that. Eye candy. Likewise they will often get more chances than some, no matter how worthless they might be.

But once you're out of school 5 years, you're gonna write your own ticket. Because after that magic 3-5 years you've either stepped up or shut up.

Anyways I am digressing here. As for the album name, understand that the average person isn't usually that swift. I think if you actually went around and asked people on the spot {not where they can pretend to know the word online, not that i am saying did that} you'd find that most people probably couldn't give you an answer.
