You'd have to seriously overpay to trigger a seller to make a move until the last possible moment.

I for one don't want Gainey to make the mistake Pittsburgh made last year so the only realistic move until deadline day is replacing Carbo and hoping for a change in the room.
There is some trade possibility right now with some other good teams that are in a similar predicament as the habs. Two east conference teams that Gainey HAS to be looking at are the Penguins and Rangers. Both are struggling mightily from glaring issues and are probably looking at a retooling more than a desperation buyer/seller move. Both the Rangers and Pens desperately need some skilled wingers, something the habs have an abundance of. While those two teams are deep down the middle and have enough Dmen (esp. the Pens with Gonchar back)

The Habs need another defenceman immediately: Perhaps Mara or Khalinin since I doubt the Rangers can re-sign both, the Pens have 8 dmen on roster: Boucher, Scuderi and Eaton impending UFA. A trade with the Pens seems reasonable and would help both teams. How about Plekanics + Kostitstyn Bros for J. Staal + Boucher or Scuderi?

The difference the Pens and us is that we, with the farm we are suppose to have, we can afford to trade some young kids, we have a couple of NHL bound prospect. At one point a team that wants to improve needs to take a chance. BG did it in the pass trading Joe Nieuwendyk(sp?) for Jarome iginla. also stop blaming the return for hossa as the reason for Pens trouble...neither christensen, nor Armstrong nor Esposito is the infamous missing winger on their team..maybe malone but he wasn't traded for Hossa...

BG needs to take a chance bring in a UFA maybe he will love montreal sign for a couple of years...at least we will have a stud for a couple of year instead of hopping that one of our farm kid will become that stud in is first nhl season... and we are not talking about selling the entire farm system just a 1 or 2

Do you really think teams that are fighting each other for a playoff spot will trade with each other? Think a GM will risk a PR disaster by handing their playoff spot to a rival via a trade? No way. Not until the summer.

I wouldn't mind having Staal but that would be a horrible trade. A.Kostystyn would score 40+ in his sleep with Crosby or Malkin. Plekanec is a good player having a bad year. S.Kostystyn needs an attitude adjustment, but he still has pretty good trade value. Boucher was just on waivers a month ago if I'm not mistaken, they'd give him away. Scuderi is a decent depth guy but we have 4 #5-5 guys already, he wouldn't help us. Gross overpayment for Staal who's already making around 4 mil I believe and on pace for 45 points.

Malone was traded along with Roberts because Pitt mismanaged their Cap and couldn't afford him... who was asking for less than Hossa btw. Pitt made the Hossa deal KNOWING they couldn't afford him on July 1st. Pitt would have been better off not trading for Hossa and kept Armstrong & Malone who bring exactly what that team needs badly. All Shero has done is highlight just how fast a team can go in the dumps with just a couple bad deals.

Gainey is already taking too many chances on the UFAs & RFAs that are on the team right now. If most of them walk the young players and near NHL ready prospects that teams will want for band-aid fixes are his insurance policy.
