Flames keen on Euro trip

Quote:
The NHL will not announce plans for next year's season opener in Europe for another month or so, but at least three clubs have expressed interest in going, including one from Canada, the Calgary Flames.
(...)
Flames president Ken King said in an interview, "If the league or anyone thought we'd be worthy, we'd certainly be interested."

I know this story is more than a week old, but since nobody else picked this up and some European Flames' fans around here, I thought that this still deserved a thread.

What do you guys think? Are the North American Flames' fans around here excited about the prospect to play in Europe and interested in coming over to visit the 'old continent' or would you be bitter about losing some exhibition games and at least one home game at the Saddledome?

They are more than welcome to come and play the season open here in Malmö Arena! I'm sure it'd sell out with 13,000 and i'd be there without a doubt! Not always easy for me to come to Calgary and see a game, haven't since 2000 and when I go to Canada its to Toronto to see my sister. So a game here in Malmö would be fantastic!

I hope they don't go. The less travel teh better... we already get one of the worst travel skeds in the NHL already annually... why compound that?... send teams that are loaded with Euros to show off to their home countries

This is an important comment. With the flames only having one European player I don't know if the NHL would want to send the flames.

no worries with the pre-season games, but a season opener? nah son.

imo send a columbus or a montreal.. you know, a team with more than one euro on it (no matter marketable he may be). maybe even the yotes to possibly attract investors (as much as i oppose the nhl in europe it'd be a great business decision on bettmans part)

Didn't the flames open the season in like Japan or China back in the dark years? I don't really care either way, but just don't think the flames would be the most marketable team.

This is one of the most common misperceptions about NHL fandoms in Europe. People over here do not necessarily cheer for the teams, where the most fellow countrymen play in.

Absolutely fair enough. The NHL is trying to market the game to Europeans through these games though so having some Europeans on the team would probably help that.

Are the flames popular in Europe? I really don't know.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Flames play in Europe against a team with a bunch of Europeans. It'd certainly be fun being the bad guy in the building.

Not as popular as the Wings, Maple Leafs or Canadiens, but they are certainly attractive enough to sell out a building.

Flames to face Sharks in Finland to open season next year?

On the Hotstove tonight I think Scott Morrison said something about 6 teams opening the season next year in Europe, Hawks vs. Panthers in Prague, Wings vs. Blues in Stockholm and the Flames vs. Sharks in Helsinki. I don't think it's official yet, but they said it was 'being discussed'. Not too sure if i'd want to start the season in Europe, vs. the Sharks no less.

Saw that as well. There was a thread a little while back with a quote from Ken King saying they would like to play in Europe. Sounds like it was a go from what Morrison was saying. I'd rather not start the year playing in Europe, but sounds like that is the plan. It'll be good for Kipper atleast.

I'd love for it to happen. Malmö Arena would be a good place to play

Seems that the Flames are out of the European plans of the league (at least for the next season).

Weird though. I wonder why the change.

Maybe the above cited article was a bit premature:
According to the biggest German newspaper, the Flames and Sharks will start their season in Berlin's O2-arena in the first week of October.
