Vs is bloody awful.I popped it on last night figuring there's a full slate of games in the NHL tonight, they must have something on tv.But that was not the case, they had some outdoors show on.

Thank god for online streaming, I had a wide selection of games to watch.

The Toronto/Columbus game was fantastic!

I agree with the posters above me, bring back Gary Cohen and NHL2nite!

the NHL made the deal with versus that they only have games on mondays and tuesdays(other than playoffs) just like NBC only has 1 "game of the week" or 2 in a rare case.

ESPN motorsports coverage is unwatchable as it gets (that's the only thing I watch on the channel), and since most of the NHL talent is no longer there, I have my doubts it's going to be a throwback to the good old days. ESPN seems to employ a lot of people who've been to CT School of Broadcasting to become an on-air personality, but they don't know jack **** about the sport they're covering.

NHL 2nite was on a half hour a night, and because of ESPN's basketball commitments it wasn't on every night of the week. 'NHL On the FLY' on NHL Network blows NHL 2night away by about 1,000 miles. And it's on EVERY night.

This story doesn't make sense. ESPN has absolutely no room in their schedule during the winter for hockey. With the MLB Network marginalizing Baseball Tonight I can see why ESPN has some room in their schedule in May/June, but do we really want any network coming in at the end just to televise the finals? And we certainly don't want the finals moving from NBC to ESPN.

You want hockey coverage by a network that cares more about hockey than poker? Watch NHL Network. Hockey 24/7, including the fabulous Hockey Night in Canada telecasts in HD on Saturday nights. It doesn't get any better than that.

If they'd make it part of the basic cable packages, I would

Trust me, it's well worth the extra few dollars. At this point I can't imagine not having the NHL Network.

If true, and one line on his blog is getting a lot of mileage, I think the deal would replace the NBC deal.

In 08 nbc reupped for one more year - they carry the SCF and if you call the Sunday games big games then it would make sense.

So NBC vs ESPN (no pun intended)...I would have to say that NBC gets more eyeballs. But the trade off would be more promotion and coverage on sports ctr and everywhere else - that has a lot of value to the NHL. ESPN has totally neglected and denied hockey's existence since it moved to VS.

It's less the idea that it's only a few extra dollars, and more the idea that a lot of people will never know about it or discover it because they didn't know they could pay a little extra for it. Though I guess I'm looking at this more from the perspective of ESPN vs. NHL Network. I was kind of miffed when they had some games exclusively on the NHL Network earlier this year

I know. All of them should be on network TV.

The World Series of Poker gets higher ratings on ESPN than the NHL used to get. It's amazing there are any games on network TV.

We need to get back on ESPN.
1) Not going to happen.
2) Why would it be good? The only problem I have with no ESPN NHL is when I am out of town the hotel doesn't have VS. Otherwise I can do without ESPN's antics.
I don't even watch ESPN when I want MLB or NFL, it has become too much of a gossip channel.

Do you get NHL network? On the Fly is the greatest hockey show I've ever seen. Much better than NHL2nite ever was in my opinion.

All I can add to this is that a close friend of mine works with ESPN (no hes never been on TV) and that ESPN had a rather huge bid in for the rights to broadcast English Premier League matches but got blown out of the water and lost that bid/contract. NHL was its back up.

I can't name names, of course, but a close friend of mine from ESPN said NHL hockey got a small fraction of the ratings achieved on that network by such 'sports' as classic poker reruns, cheerleading, and the World's Strongest Man.

That's been widely reported. Bowling stood out as well as something that shouldn't touch the NHL in terms of viewership but apparently beat it out.

And for whoever asked about Gary Thorne, he's been calling the Orioles game on MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Net) and Comcast Sports Net here in MD/DC. I've always been a huge fan of Gary, but I'll admit that he sounded a bit odd calling MLB games. He seems to have settled in though, and now I look forward to hearing him.
