What I would do in the off-season

If I were Bob Gainey, I would do the following in the off-season:

1) Let Kovalev, Lang, Bouillon, Dandenault, Begin and Brisebois walk unless they take pay cuts.

2) Re-sign Koivu, Tanguay, Schneider and Komisarek.

3) Give qualifying offers to Higgins, Plekanec, D'Agostini, Chipchura, Stewart and Latendresse.

4) Package picks (including the 1st round pick) and an offensive and/or defensive prospect to move in the top 10 picks at this years draft and get the biggest, strongest and fastest skating center that pick can buy.

5) Trade Halak for a proven backup and a pick, go forward with Price.

6) Fire Melanson and hire either Andy Moog, Jeff Hackett, Francois Allaire or Benoit Allaire.

7) Look into a "life coach" to teach these players off-ice habits and someone in place to motivate them (possibly an ex-player).

8) Re-think Doug Jarvis's position and try to bring in either Larry Robinson or Mike Bossy as a defensive coach.

9) Try to trade Sergei Kostitsyn (if he continues to be un-interested).

10) Create a 1 to 3 year plan based on the above moves and go for it all.

What do you guys think?

I like pretty much everything you said but hiring Mike Bossy as a defense coach really doesn't make much sense. I think the problem with the coaching staff and GM is that they were all very similar in the way they played the game. I don't think it would hurt to have coaches with differing opinions and ideas on the way the game can be played.

I think the only players I'd resign for sure are Kosto/Koivu(cheaper contract)/Komi.
Qualifying offers to all RFAs.

Make a run for JayBo or any other big D whether its via UFA or Trade. Look for a big center and gritty top6 winger.

Depending on what happened with UFA/trades and how much they'll be asking, maybe resign Lang/Schneider/Tanguay.

I pretty much agree with everything.Personally though, I dont pick sign boullion, breezer or dandy even if they take pay cuts. Maybe Dandy if hes going to play D in a 7th man role. Schneider would have to take a pretty big pay cut also, and I max out on Komi's contract at 4 million.

I also think Sergei will eventually come around, although it may take time.

I do think that we need to draft a highly touted Centreman, and we should do whatever it takes to do so.

I would also try to sign McDonagh, Subban, Fischer and Emelin a.s.a.p.

And since we have no depth at center, I would love to trade for Esposito from Atlanta.

I'm all for starting PK and McDo in Hamilton next season with the intention of bringing them up midseason. My main move on D would be to attempt to bring Korneev in.
