HAHA, proof positive that media scan Internet forums for stuff to run with. I'm just surprised Hickey didn't say "sources" in his article.

Nothing revolutionary, political blogs often drive the news (see http://www.memeorandum.com/)... The sports commentators that don't consider the internet at all are the least up to date and the ones who consistently come up with the weakest information (see, BERGERON, Michel).

Indeed, it's better to have 1000 guys looking for information then only a few. Maybe we should make a french HF so french media could read us and be less dumb in the end.

The funniest thing is there are most likely some media guy here that reads us and agrees that the french media suck. Yet they cant say anything about it, or they still act dumb to get ratings or sell papers.

I would imagine most serious French sports journalists (especially the younger ones) scan some of the various boards and blogs (in French or English).

You can spot the ones that don't by two signs: 1) they acknowledge as much, 2) they're still reading off the newspaper box scores in studio. It's like the information revolution just passed them by.

I can see the story details now.

'Statistics indicate that troubled young winger Andrei Kostitsyn, who was recently associated with the kingpin of the criminal underworld in Montreal, is a more productive player the further away he is from enigmatic Russian star Alex Kovalev. Therefore, it is clearly time for Carbo to send him back home to Siberia.' <--only in French

ah... and in extension, political decisions are made accordingly.

And this, my friends, is a huge problem in politics. Ideology no longer has a role in politics. Nobody stands for anything except getting re-elected.

In a hockey reporting sense, this insures that there is no original thought, no soul searched opinions, and certainly no depth of knowledge passed on to paying readers.

Just easy to swallow blobs of predigested baseless opinion.

.
I disagree. The reporters can still use their "original thought" on top of the additional information they glean for free. If a top statistician like Nate Silver can make complicated studies of probability on his blog that the news organization can't afford to pay a statistician for, the public wins.

If a blogger sifts through mountains of court documents to find something of important public knowledge, the news organizations have just saved money. Same goes with sports reporting. The bloggers don't replace the journalists they're just part of the information landscape.

Sometimes a kernel of valuable information would have never come to light because you wouldn't have a thousand minds working on their own free times but only one journalist working on it with a limited budget. You might not like it, but it's reality.
