who are the sellers this year?

in the east, the Sens, lightning, islanders, and thrashers are obvious sellers but the leafs are now only 9 points out. A 4 or 5 game winning streak puts them right in the mix.

it is insanely tight in the West but teams will eventually come to the conclusion that it is time to prepare for the future. Right now, Colorado is 8 points out and Pheonix is only 6 points out.

other than the bottom 4 in the East, is anyone else going to be sellers?

After the last 2 games---hopefully the Rangers are--Oh but wait with all these huge contracts even that doubtful.

Maybe the Leafs, just that is just a wild guess

I can see the Leafs being active as Burke will want to put his stamp on that team.

Personally, as a Thrashers fan, I hope the list of sellers stays small. Supply and demand. With fewer available assets available to help the playoff teams the prices go up

I think the Leafs are done. If BUFF wins at their current rate - they'll end up with 91 points. If Toronto goes 15-5 they still end up at 90 points and out of the play-off's. Their only chance would be to have the Rangers or Sabres melt down, and neither PITT nor CAR get hot. I think that's a REALLY long shot.

They'd be a lot better off in the long run moving Antropov/Poni, seeing if anyone is interested in Blake, and seeing if someone would pay more for Kubina or Kaberle than they could get in the offs-season.

I think you also will see COL, STL & PHO all be sellers. They're not that far out, but with as many teams as they have to pass it's really a long shot. I might have included LA in that group - but they're the youngest team in the league and they really don't have the assets they'd want to move a the deadline anyway.

I think you might even see a few teams that are quite clearly in the playoff picture sell a player or two if the prices are right. There will also likely be quite a few trades like the Stillman trade last year and the Whitney trade this year, much more so then usual IMO.

The Avalanche will definitely be sellers this year. They have pretty much zero chance of making it this year.

That's my guess, you probably can add the leafs to the mix so you have 8 teams selling.

By the deadline, these teams will be sellers:

East: NYI, ATL, NYR, OTT, TB, TO

West: ANA (yesterday's trade and big loss all but confirmed it), COL, DAL, EDM, LA, NAS, PHX, STL

That's 8 teams in the west selling? Considering 8 out of 15 teams make it you would think some of those teams would try and make the playoffs(maybe they won't be buyers but I can't see them being sellers at the same time)

Anaheim does seem to be, yes. But Dallas? They're probably playoff-bound. Edmonton? They're still well in the hunt. LA would probably be in the proper position, but what would they sell?

Disagree about NYI. They've nothing much to sell. If anything, they're buying RFA's with talent. They've got salary space to burn for talent. And they don't need more picks.

Cheers,

Definitely agree that the Ducks are now sellers.

I'm not sold that St. Louis is going to be doing much selling, they are a decent team that is almost impossible to out-work.

NYI, ATL, TB, OTT, TOR in the East

PHX, COL, Probably ANA in the West. Also NSH, STL, LA if they have anything to sell.

This is exactly what leaf fans are hoping for.

The more teams that stay-in-play in the west the fewer players there will be available on deadline day.

Back to Economics....its simply supply & demand (as you pointed out)

I agree, outside of Guerin and maybe Weight the Isles maybe one of the worst teams the NHL has ever iced.

There isn't a lot of potiential for movement on that team....and they won't be trading their young guys.

I see the west reluctant to make big trades within the conference with the playoff situation as tight as it is right now.

Maybe more between the conferences?

Why would DAL & EDM be sellers? They're basically tied for 8th right now. If EDM wins their next game, their 1 point out of 6th place.

Witt(top defensive defenseman, should be a number 4 on most teams)
Guerin(experienced veteran, killer shot, second line foward, pending UFA)
Weight(experienced veteran, very good on the powerplay, pending UFA)
Martinek(third line defenseman, very good defensively)
McAmmond(fourth line grinder)

Obviously the last two guys shouldn't bring in that much, but we do have some guys to trade.

Injuries have ravaged them, but Dallas actually doesn't have much to sell anyways. Lehtinen?

Also banged up, Edmonton has to figure out what to do with Cole. And Roloson.

I would say the sellers on March 4th will be:

East:
- Toronto
- Ottawa
- Tampa Bay
- Atlanta
- Islanders

West:
- Anaheim
- Los Angeles
- Phoenix
- Colorado

I think Nashville, St. Louis (they're on a roll) and Edmonton will be more buyers than sellers. I could see them making a true hockey move, but I doubt they'll do an outright sale of veterans for picks and prospects.

So 21 teams buying or standing pat, 9 teams doing an outright sale of some veterans - good odds for the selling teams.
