MONEYBALL.

Good pick-up. This guy has been an absolute physical beast in the past, but hasn't played all that great in Philly in the last month. Was paired with Timonen on the top-pairing for some of the season though.

Good pickup especially if they wind up packaging someone like SOB in a trade.

I guess he basically comes in as a #7 dman... pushes Davison down a notch and sends Nycholat to the Moose?

NICE pickup...could this finally mean the end of Nycholat in Vancouver? I really hope so, he is not an NHL calibre defensemen, IMO. Nice depth pickup, wonder what this means for the defense down the stretch? If we see SOB moved as rumored?

Most likely. Definite upgrade over Davison and Nycholat and not too far off from O'Brien in most areas. Could make O'Brien expendable for the right offer.

This is what I was thinking. Vaananen is a huge upgrade on Davison/Nycholat, though he's also a great stop-gap for all those short-term Salo injuries. Veteran, logged a lot of ice around the league, and known for his size and physical play (though he's toned it down this year according to Philly fans).

It's like a free NHL defenseman.

I think it is a case of Philly clearing cap space for Briere's return.

Most Flyers fans didn't want to see him go but he's was the price they had to pay to get Briere back into the line-up. Solid stay-at-home type with great size and a bit of physical presence. Solid 5th/6th guy on mos teams.

Why does R Johnson always jump when he goes into the boards. He did it against Bert and I've seen him do it a few times. It looks pathetic and it's basically a dive.

$1 million this year going to UFA. Pretty much cost us nothing in dollars or assets. As soon as he was waived it had 'Gillis' written all over it assuming he actually fell to our waiver position.

This guy is a solid Dman. I was really pissed when we waived him and someone claimed him, but I'm glad it was the Canucks.

Ossi is a really good Dman IMO. Hes solid positionally, and rarely makes bone head plays. Very reliable.

The reason why he fell out of favor in Philly was because he wasnt using his size enough. That alone put him in the dog house of our idiot coach and then it all went downhill.

Eitherway, Hes a great dman and only 1 mill.

Hey guys, Flyers fan here. We all loved the guy. Most of us wanted him signed after this year... but Stevens is a ****** and decides that he rather have Albert's ******** contract then Ossi's. He made few mistakes playing with Kimmo, and the only reason he got scratched was cause he had one bad game. Ever since then Parent has been very good so he never got back in the lineup. He is better then a healthy scratch I believe. I hope for the best =)

He pushes Davison down to #8 and Nycholat to #9.

I do think he can still be a third pairing guy so something might be up...it at least gives Gillis some more flexibility. But I think in the end he will be the #7 guy down the stretch drive (i.e. if a D-man is moved there will be another one coming in).

That sounds like what the Canucks need. They have enough guys who play physical on the back end. Vaananen sounds more reliable than SOB and probably a good partner for Bieksa. Someone who will stay in good position while Bieksa runs around.

I would actually put him above Shane O'Brien on the depth chart. They play the same game but Vaananen virtually makes no mistakes and is a better skater.
