Philly have cap problem. Philly need get small Frenchman on team. Philly need get rid of money. Philly send Ossi on waivers. Philly clear money.

Cmon people - this is not the second coming of Bobby Orr - it's another teams cast-off. Let's curb our enthusiasm a bit - ok?
Comparing one depth d-man's flaws and strengths to another depth d-man's flaws and strengths means we're rating him as the second coming of Bobby Orr? Huh.

sorry Bieksa, unless we pick up a yank, you're going to have to take a seat in the press box.

cap problems or no, I'm still surprised that Philly couln't get even a 5th rounder for him. but I'm also surprised he made it to us on the waiver wire. so our gain and I'm not complaining.

Bieksa was born in Grimsby, Ontario.

Perfect. Now we just need to shore up our third line, hopefully a PK specialist center.

Poor alternate

In his defence(hoho no pun intended) Bieksa did go the US College route!

This could be the same sort of thing as what happened with Bryzgalov last year. Everyone knows that the team in question needs to clear cap space, hence no one will deal with them, or they have outrageous trade demands.

Also possible that Holmgren wasn't expecting to lose both of them on waivers or didn't want to give them up, if he could help it.

Gotta like adding solid depth on D for the playoffs and not having to give up a thing for it.

I will be happy not to see Nycholat in a Canucks uniform anymore

I doubt that Salo and Mitchell get split up. They have been playing well together this stretch.

The hilarious part (or tragic depending on who you cheer for) is the fact Briere just announced he won't be able to return tonight, and with Timonen out with the flu the Flyers will be forced to play with 5 defensemen.

Good pickup. Gives the team more options moving forward, should be an interesting trade deadline.

There are probably a couple of reasons.

The first is that the timing isn't great because most teams that will be buyers this deadline have very little cap space and using up what little they have now before they have a chance to evaluate deals that may go through over the next five days isn't the most prudent move. The Canucks have a ton of room even with Vaananen on board so it isn't as much of a concern. Similarly, for Philadelphia, they needed to make room fast for Briere, and so instead of holding out for a mid round pick they decided to waive him to get him off the books before the weekend.

Second, teams know the Flyers are in cap trouble and probably weren't willing to throw them a bone just to help them out.

No - that's great. Thanks dude. I appreciate your insightful response.

Problem is that you are not addressing my point......I reiterate - read slowly - why did Philly give the guy away for nothing if he is so good? Why could they not have at least got a 7th round pick or something for him?

If the guy is such a 'stud' why was he only able to garner a 1 year deal at 1 million as a UFA after last year.

Cmon people....slow down here.

It's relative expectations. No one is expecting Vaananen to be outstanding but the guy should be one of the best #7 defensemen in the league.

Hey guys Philly fan here and Ossi fan. This is a great pick up for you. He is solid however he was shoved into coach John Stevens' dog house and was never let back out. Good luck to you and your team!

I really hate cap world.

I still think I'd have rather given up a 2nd and re-acquired Sopel.

Hell, at the very least Vaananen is a better player now than Weinrich and Brown were in '06.

Knee-jerk reaction by Flyers management in my opinion. They want Briere back in the line-up in a bad way, and he was slotted to return tonight in Montreal. The league would have forced them to move these salaries to activate Briere.

Had they been able to I'm sure Philly would have preferred to keep the guy, but we operate in a cap-based league.

Vaananen is guy a who has played full, solid seasons in the NHL, and at only 28 years of age is relatively young as well. I remember disliking him in Colorado due to how punishing he was down low, and in the corners.

Given - puck movement, and offensive creativity are not his strong suits, but I'd argue in recent games (especially when Salo is out) the Canucks have needed a good shot-blocker and PK defenseman just as much as an offensively creative one.

Honestly, would you rather give up a 2nd rounder for a guy like Carney or Sopel as opposed to picking up Vaananen for nothing.
