Awesome pickup.

+1 Gillis.

Honestly, I can't believe he fell to Vancouver's waiver position.

Interesting note: Vaananen instantly becomes the leader in 'hits' among our blue-liners.

Given the stat is inherently biased and flawed, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Looks like the defence is set for the playoffs. Now pick up a good scrapy third liner who can work the boards and help the PK and I think we're ready for the playoffs.

It's nice to know that the Canucks can survive one injury and not have to insert Davison/Nycholat in the lineup and instead still roll with 6 competent NHL defenders who are all capable of logging 15+ minutes per game.

As for Vaananen, just looking at the numbers he's been quite good for Philly. Of their regular defensemen he's been on the ice for the fewest GA/minute.

I actually sort of hoped they'd pick up Metropolit too but I didn't think that Vaananen would even make it to the Canucks on the waiver list.

I was hoping for Metro as well. He could have replaced Wellwood or Johnson. Although Wellwood has played poorly in this recent stretch, I don't want to see him moved at this point. Johnson on the other hand...

Kesler is bound to go back to 3rd line C at some point. In this way, the Canucks can field 3 strong pairings in the twins, Sundin+Demo, and Kes and Burr. They then can rotate wingers among these pairings - which I think is the best way to view the team long-term. Meaning, Gillis has to acquire a forward now, preferably a RW'er. Metro could have subbed at RW for a while, until someone better was acquired (a Prucha or an Armstrong). Curious to know what happened to him (Metro)?

Edit: Damn the Habs got him.

Great pick-up. I've been a Vaananen fan for a long time. I assume this means Nycholat will go down to the Moose. Wonder if Salo will be given more days off to rest as the season winds down.

If Gillis had put in a claim for him, we would have gotten him too. I believe the Habs are after the Canucks for waiver claims.

Is there a restriction on multiple waiver pick-ups in a given time frame?

The only reason I see us passing on Metropolit is if we had to choose between Vaananen and Metropolit or else Gillis has another deal in mind to shore up the bottom six centre position.

The best way to evaluate moves like this is often to see what the fans of his former team think after the fact.

It seems most Flyer fans are pissed about losing Ossi for nothing. I think Holmgren is a terrific GM and he probably has something else on the go, but it is always nice to get a positive asset for nothing.

I like this pick up too at the moment.. But am I the only one who will miss SOB when we (likely) trade him? He seems to be a really good team-first guy and you can tell he brings up morale with the rest of the guys. just wondering if the locker room will suffer from (possibly) removing and replacing him with a Euro.

i'm weary of this because Blues fan felt this way when they lost Ryan Johson...and so far I think he's been somewhat of a let-down as our "face off and PK specialist"

I agree. SOB brings that nasty edge to the Canucks D and he would be missed. Don't trade him Gillis.

yeah, probably. I expect the whole team to quit on the organization and take to the streets in riots of protest. I can see it already, the Sedins and Sundin raging down Granville Street with signs reading "No more stinking Euros!"

To be fair, Ryan Johnson has been playing this season with a broken foot(which was just recently healed) and a broken finger.

somewhat of a let-down? No need to sugarcoat, the guy has been abysmal. I don't remember much from Blues fans with regards to regret with not bringing him back.

Basically Ossi adds depth, and if need be allows a trade to be made involving a d-man without hurting the club as much (I still doubt a d-man moves out unless another is coming back in).

Also sets the depth chart a bit:

1. Salo
2. Mitchell
3. Bieksa
4. Ohlund
5. Edler
6. O'Brien
7. Vaananen
8. Davison
9. Nycholat
10. McIver
11. Baumgartner (believe he is signed to an NHL deal...)

Very nice organizational depth.

Ugh. That trade deadline was bad. At least nothing has really come of the assets we gave away:

Keith Carney trade:
Brett Skinner
2006 2nd - Bryce Swan
Eric Weinrich trade:
Tomas Mozjis
2006 3rd - Vladimir Zharkov
Mika Noronen trade:
2006 2nd - Jhonas Enroth
Sean Brown trade:
2006 4th - T.J. Miller

It's pretty unlikely that the Canucks would've done much better with those draft picks.

The good team-first guy who whined to the media after getting scratched and talked about wanting out? He put himself over the team.

Nobody here has really addressed why Philly could not deal this suppossed outstanding defensive hard hitting d-man for at least a late round pick. Similarly, no one has addressed how it is that he ended up in the Canucks lap. Where are the Canucks in the waiver pecking order?

So far pictures and baby talk have not answered this.

Well you have to draw the line somewhere. Being team-first doesn't mean you sacrifice all personal notions of individuality. That said, I don't agree with what O'Brien said to the media, but he seems to have learned his lesson - he's a lot humbler now and seems to know his role a little better.

On the ice, though, O'Brien sticks up for team mates more than anyone else on the team. I think that's what he was getting at with 'team-first'.

Yes...and this past week his hand was described as looking like a prop from Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

You can never have too many d-men. With Salo hobbled a bit by a sore ankle and with Ohlund's calf still healing from a nasty cut....it is always good to have extra
d-men around. That said, one of Nycholat and Davison will be sent down or traded in the next 48 hours or so I believe.

Vaananen is slow ... I wouldn't get all that excited.
