This is what I thought as soon as I heard the news. Another bonus is that Vaananen doesn't take the undisciplined type of penalties that SOB seems to take every game.

I guess we'll know soon enough but how is Ossi's skating? I like his size but if he's not mobile it's kind of pointless. It's one of the reasons I like SOB, for a big guy he has decent wheels and fairly good hands.

I haven't seen him this year but from what I remember from his Colorado/Phoenix days he was actually a pretty good skater for a big guy. Certainly an upgrade on Davison in that regard.

Really nice to see this happen. When I saw he got put on waivers I hoped Canucks would put in a claim.

Nice to see Gillis making effective use of the waiver wire. Way too many decent players have gone through in the past that I would have liked to see the Canucks take a look at. This is like a free trade for defensive depth at the deadline.

People in this thread are saying that he's a better skater than O'Brien.

Very key. I will reserve all judgment until he plays a game for us.

One thing that I really like about OB that I am sure many of you notice (and many casual fans don't), is his puck poise and evasive ability with oncoming forechecking pressure. He quite regularly outwits opposing forwards. I am not talking Alex Edler's patented "turn with puck against the boards and freeze it until forward has engaged", but making smart little drop passes or switches to open up an avenue for his partner.

I think the team recognizes his potential. They played him throughout his early season slump, and brought him back after a bit of an off-ice no-no with the media.

I'd be shocked if he was dealt. He is only 23/24 as well, so there is lots of room to grow.

Nice move. Gives us real depth and means Nycholat should never see another game this season. It also gives Gillis the option of moving a defenceman in a hockey trade if he wants to.

It's better to be pissed off than pissed on.

Avs fan here. You guys will like Ossi. Doesn't make too many mistakes, is a pretty good skater for a guy his size, and is a decent puck mover. The thing that frustrates fans is he is so big, but he doesn't use his size consistently. He'll go in spurts where he's incredible hulk on the ice killing everything, but than he'll get pretty passive again. Still though, he is a good bottom pairing guy. Once is a while he'll have a deer in the headlights moment, where he has the puck on his stick, and has almost too much time to make a decision, and he'll turn it over. But overall he is a good player. He also seems to play better when given a bigger role. When he was traded to the Avs, he got paired with Blake, and was a force. But then he regressed back and got played on the third pairing and never was the same intimidating force. I'd put him with Salo if I were you guys. They'd make a good partnership I think.

I don't really care too much about Metro being gone. Ossi being gone is another story. He was perfect for depth in the playoffs.

Good pickup. Wouldn't be surprised if this pushed O'Brien to the bench in the playoffs, Vaananen's a smarter player and if we really need somebody to run into scrums late and shove somebody, he can probably figure out how to do that.

I think hes meaner than that, with less puck skills.
Imo it would wise to pair him with salo, i can see him playing more tough beside salo.
