It is because of people like Don Cherry that young Canadians like Sid the Kid turn into joyless automatons on the ice, while players like Ovechkin and Ilya let their love of the game shine through...even if it might hurt the other teams feelings.
The NHL wants the game to grow and it starts with some emotion like Ovy has. Emotion gets people involved in the game. Joyless automatons are what makes the game bland in the eyes of many people, especially the casual viewer.
Agree with him, goals arent supposed to be celebrated you know? Just score and skate back to center ice with your head down. We also have to get rid of hugging, pats, and dressing rooms. Makes our game gay.
I love how he pokes fun at soccer while he doesnt show the awful showboating that happens in american football.
I love the way Ovechkin plays hockey, he's one of my favorite players in the league. But the celebrations are ridiculous and add nothing in my opinion. But that type of thing sells well in the NFL and NBA, so the NHL has to love the fact their young star acts like he does.
And Crosby doesn't over-celebrate ever, right? Please. Cherry just topped his Naslund bashing rant from a couple weeks ago in terms of bat**** insanity. The Caps may be one of the only teams who celebrates wilder than the Penguins and yet Crosby is so humble on the ice? Well sure Ovechkin does ham it up but when you're that good, you've got a right to. And if someone takes him out it won't be with a clean check. It'll be with an elbow by someone like Pronger and every OV hater will rejoice despite the fact it was cheap. Cheaper than Ovechkin's style, which is pretty dirty at times.
Yeah but listen to Don kids. Be more like Jason Strudwick who limits his physicality to fights and checking because he can't score to save his life compared to OV. Who in their right mind thinks Joe Thornton is better than Ovechkin or even the best in the world? Didn't Don also say he would not be dominant this year because players would crush him cutting into the middle!? Sounds like a fantasy more than an accurate prediction. 45 goals later and I still don't see it. I want us to win the gold at 2010 but the only good thing I can derive from losing to the Russians would be to see Cherry eat humble pie.
I'm sure he'd pass it off but the fact is that not in every case would I take a Canadian star over a European star. In the world of Don and his cut of hockey lover, if you're a European legend and you showboat, you're a dirt bag and don't got **** on a Canadian. If you're a quiet, classy one like a Lidstrom or Datsyuk, you're just ignored. The game belongs to the world, not just Canada. Don't get all defensive just because 1 or 2 people imply we're not the best. Of course we are, but not like we once were. Bottom line is, OV can sell the game better than some scarred, toothless, vanilla personality. Overall, say what you willa bout how great he has been, but a Joe Sakic cannot market the game around the world the way an Ovechkin can.
Well said Don. There is a point where celebration gets carried away into a joke and that is where Ovechkin is. Jumps around like an idiot everytime he scores. Game could be 6-0 and he'd celebrate like he just won the Stanley Cup. Now don't get me wrong, I agree that many players need to show a bit more personality and emotion in the game but he gets carried away.
In regards to how he gets away with everything, he's right. Ovechkin is gonna hurt someone with borderline hits that he only gets away with because of who he is. I never would want someone to get hurt but Alex needs to watch out because someone will catch him one day.
