He is gonna be a big star for us as soon as next year maybe. I really have high hopes for subban. His style is amazing, and will be perfect for the habs.
Mike Van Ryn is available. If the Leafs cannot move either Kaberle or Kubina come March 4th they will move Van Ryn although he is probably the most solid and consistent defenseman on the Leafs. Averaging almost a point every 2 games for a second pairing defenseman. His price would be a 2nd and a 4th. He is still under contract for another season.

I am still not sold on Subban. He had one good tournament and plays on a Belleville Bulls team with the top goalie in the OHL and one of the top power forward centres in the O. I think if he works on becoming a more complete defenseman and better in his own zone he will be much better off. It is obviously still too early to tell because he is only 18, or he may have just turned but the point is that he is young.
Apparently Brian Campbell is available... his 7 million dollar contract might be too pricey for another 5 years as well, huh.

Our pro scouts have not exactly been on fire lately. Samsonov for example?

I understand your point of view but I think Pronger is not what he was when the Ducks won the cup. Why would the Ducks move him instead of Niedermayer? Scottie has threatened to retire twice already and may do so at the end of this season. If I had to move somebody, with everything lse being equal, I would choose the younger, heavier hitting option every time.

Samsonov had a pretty good year before the Habs signed him, 23-30-53 in 74 games plus 15 in 24 playoff games...That's what the scouts saw. He just never clicked here. He had no chemistry with Kovalev and Carbo soured on him(see Ryder).

Bottom line, he makes a lot of money and won't win us a cup...I don't want to trade D'agostini/Pacioretty/Higgins plus McDonagh/Subban plus a 1st for him.

From Wikipedia......
On June 20, 2008, during the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Tanguay waived his no-trade clause and was dealt to the Montreal Canadiens, along with a fifth-round pick in 2008 (Maxim Trunev), in exchange for the 25th overall pick (Greg Nemisz) and a second-round pick in 2009
Yea, I forgot about Tanger. I thought it was a 2008 2nd rdr that went to Calgary, but no. So no 2nd rdrs this year. Too bad, traditionally, its our best round in the draft.

Of course, we could always trade for Pronger now & then trade him at the draft. He doesn't have a no-trade clause. He has one year left on his contract & we could always trade him for a player who is signed or who would sign in Montreal. He would be an asset in any case. I just hope he doesn't go to Boston or Philly or N.J.

Am i the only one to think that we mostly need a top line center? I mean, sure i'd welcome Pronger at any time but i'd prefer to see Gainey getting a N°1 centerman and a reliable stay-at-home Dman.

I agree, we shouldn't try and get him at all. We would only be wasting prospects and picks for a guy that will not put us over the top.

I absolutely loath the way Van Ryn plays defense always turning his back and jumping into the end boards and surprised he gets hurt. I do not care how many points he gets every 2 games he is a loser I highly doubt would acquire a defenseman softer than Brisebois.

Actually they have been. Since the Ribeiro and Samsonov debacles, here is a list of our pro acquisitions...

Gorges
Hamrlik
Smolinski
Tanguay
LANG
Laraque
Schneider
Metropolit

Those are 6 good to great acquisitions for our team, one questionable in Laraque, and one yet to see in Metropolit (though I expect good results on him).

The Pro scouting is no longer the hell hole it used to be.

true all good pickups...

but no BIG star in there, as in scoring machine or Great d man.

not knocking these guys, but still lacking that BIG deal.

Big deal is a myth

and I'm pretty sure you would be the first to whine if one of the traded asset would turn out good
