if he clears how would we meet the minimum without adding Salary? with JJ not getting likely many if any bonuses we must be right close..

For the entire time he was here, he counted against the cap. There will only be a minimal loss by his departure, and we have been well above the cap all season (by a few million anyway). That's how a team with only 2 million in cap space can trade for a 4-5 million dollar rental player at the end of the year.

his most important assets were his attitude and how he was able to get shots through from the point on the powerplay.

right but it's still relative... we were around 3-4 over but we still have to make up the difference relative to him gone for the next 20.. plus JJ not making many if any bonuses.. Doughty's bonuses could play a large factor...

Why? If we are three to four million over, what is the loss of Preissing's salary over the next twenty days. Even if it adds to a million dollars, the Kings would still be two to three million over. It's accumulative

Good luck Tom; hope you become this year's Stuart (ie. join Cup winning team) for not playing for so long.

Good Luck Tom!!
I really think he will be picked up by the Dallas Stars. they are in great need of a D-Man who can move the puck and get a good shot on net...Ever since Sergei Zubov was hurt on the Stars the team has done so horribly on the Powerplay,he can change things there in a big way. Hopefully he can come to Dallas, I can get to see him!! (If only it would've been Gauthier to be the one to go! )

Really hope the guy gets picked up and gets to play somewhere. Always liked the guy and a very nice person in real life too. I think he could be a great addition even given his contract on the right team, simply doesn't fit into our system and style though.

because Doughty has about 2.6 million in bonus money and Jack has over 1 million in bonus money... now with JJ likely not hitting many, if any at all; Doughty's bonuses could play a large part...

Like sweatypickle said, there are a ton of bonuses that neither Doughty nor Johnson will obtain. This article did a great job detailing the entry level contract and how hard it is to achieve the bonuses, especially the B bonuses payable by the team and especially for defensemen.

Neither Doughty nor Johnson are on pace for any of the B bonuses payable by the team (Doughty has an outside shot at aggregate ice time among defensemen; he currently 20th and needs to finish in the top 10).

Johnson is not on pace to hit any of his bonuses. The only one he has an outside shot at is 10 goals for the season (the other ones he had a shot had a 42GP minimum and he could only play 41 games if he played every game the rest of the season).

As good as Doughty's been, he is on pace for only 3 of the type A bonuses: the ice time bonus, the end of season All Rookie team bonus, and the blocked shots bonus. And Gauthier could very well overtake Doughty in the blocked shots category if Gauthier doesn't get get suspended again or traded, which would negate the blocked shot bonus.

At this point, it's likely that Doughty and Johnson only combine to achieve $425,000-$637,500 out of all of their bonuses.

Regardless, we the fans don't need to understand the subtleties in successful cap management, Lombardi the attorney is not going to put us in a critical situation.

I know it's fun to speculate these things and try to figure them out, but I have faith that Solomon and Lombardi are knee deep in this stuff every day. This doesn't seem like a management team that has been coasting, if anything it's the opposite.

All bonuses count towards the cap this season.

What is missing from this analysis is that the Kings are now in a position to take on some salary from teams up against the cap. The Bruins in particular would like to go for the Cup and may want to add an asset but would need to move salary first. It would be great to acquire another #1 pick in such a deal a la Malakov and the Sharks.

Seriously though, this is a such a smart move on so many levels. We didn't see this level of intelligence from Taylor. Well done Dean.

Zad,

Dream on buddy. The only way Kovalchuk ends up in LA is through a dispersal draft when the Thrasher franchise is folded.

Wish him the best. He showed up most nights, but would probably be better in a different system.

Good luck TP

Indeed, but the only contract I think they'd want to move is Fernandez's, and dont they want him in case Thomas gets hurt in the playoffs?

Hey, it could happen. Atlanta is losing upwards of $25 mm a year before the weak economy. They are for sale with no takers (2nd hand info). I bet this economy takes down a couple of teams.

Now you're just trying to make up for being the enemy of fun...and it's working, tell me more...

By the way, I'll be at the game on Saturday with friends. You going? If so, let's meet up early at ESPN Zone and have drinks.

all bonuses that are met count towards the season... if they aren't met you have to make up the difference somehow...

i agree we're not gonna be ****ed or anything.. however it does affect what we can do at the deadline (getting rid of or taking on salary)... of course Tommy may clear and we just won't assign him to Manch and this won't matter...
