Poile says we're buyers

Well more than likely we will add a Hlavac type guy, who could we realistically pickup?

Poile says he wants a goal-scorer, which sends two words ringing through my ears:

Alexei.

Ponikarovsky.

Of course, when Poile says he wants a goal scorer, he has two very different words ringing through his ears:

Maxim.

Afinogenov.

Afinogenov is a very talented player. He is also extremely exuberant in the offensive end and clueless in the defensive end. I actually like him and think he will have a good finish to the season if moved.....The problem with buying right now is that we would be trading assets for a short term solution. With Rinne playing as he is, we could make a cup run.....then again, our scoring is so bad that we unequivocally need a top 6 winger that gels immediately AND revitalizes the powerplay.

Not optimistic about it. I feel another Bredenden Witt type move, where he forces a trade by overpaying. Or was that Forsberg? Oh ya, it was both

I'm still not convinced we're buyers. But if we're going to make a move to bring in someone, hopefully we won't have to give to much away. Hlavac was an incredible value-for-money buy last year.

Afiniginov would be cheap this year, right? (He's on IR though, right?) His value has to be way down with the way he has (under)performed.

In the end, we get to play Detroit or San Jose in a first round matchup. Hmm...wonder how that might end.

EDIT: Just saw the score from tonights game. Holy cow.

Trotz has again brought one of the least talented teams in the league into playoff position.

Here are two guys I'd like for us to go after...

Marek Svatos- should come cheap
Derris Morris- same. Getting Devries off the roster.

You guys have a lot of young talent in the system now and coming up. Trading a couple of those prospects for a top winger wouldn't be a bad idea. Santorelli, Pihlstrom and a pick for...

Geez. Either you get ragged on for standing pat and not doing anything or get critized for "forcing a trade by overpaying." You can't win these fans over.

Or you get praised for making a moves that result in us winning a playoff round.

How do you win over fans? Win in the playoffs. How many current teams have gone longer than us without winning a playoff round? Don't have time to look it up, but I'd guess 2-4. Same thing happened in Washington with him. Made the playoffs a bunch, but failed at having any success. It's why he was fired. He has yet to build a playoff competitive team.

Position honestly doesn't matter with Lupul...it's more about his salary than anything else...

No, his massive contract extension makes us not need him.

1) Erat > Lupul

2) If we already have one "bad" contract, why would we want another?

Erat's contract was an UFA deal, Lupul's was a RFA deal. I think both are equal to about 4.5 million in value per year. The problem with Lupul for us isn't the talent, it is simply this:

1) We have a limited budget
2) For us, 4.5 million a year, is more like a 5.65 million salary for other teams. Is Lupul worth 5.65 million dollars? No. I.e., he is not worth the salary for us.

I based the second point on the fact that the cap max is 56.7 million dollars and the minimum is at 44.5 million dollars. We want to be at the minimum. Most playoff teams can afford to be at the maximum. This is roughly a 22% difference or for 4.5 million, an increase of 1.125 million in perceived value.

Maybe, maybe not, but that's not the point. The point is that we can't afford both.

Yeah fair enough.

And Lupul's was only his last RFA year I think then UFA years, and his is only 4.25 not 4.5 but still you make valid points.

And now they come in here all excited for their new player and play us, a team that just hopes they continue on a hot streak.
