Afinogenov is a very talented player. He is also extremely exuberant in the offensive end and clueless in the defensive end. I actually like him and think he will have a good finish to the season if moved.....The problem with buying right now is that we would be trading assets for a short term solution. With Rinne playing as he is, we could make a cup run.....then again, our scoring is so bad that we unequivocally need a top 6 winger that gels immediately AND revitalizes the powerplay.
Geez. Either you get ragged on for standing pat and not doing anything or get critized for "forcing a trade by overpaying." You can't win these fans over.
Or you get praised for making a moves that result in us winning a playoff round.
How do you win over fans? Win in the playoffs. How many current teams have gone longer than us without winning a playoff round? Don't have time to look it up, but I'd guess 2-4. Same thing happened in Washington with him. Made the playoffs a bunch, but failed at having any success. It's why he was fired. He has yet to build a playoff competitive team.
Erat's contract was an UFA deal, Lupul's was a RFA deal. I think both are equal to about 4.5 million in value per year. The problem with Lupul for us isn't the talent, it is simply this:
1) We have a limited budget
2) For us, 4.5 million a year, is more like a 5.65 million salary for other teams. Is Lupul worth 5.65 million dollars? No. I.e., he is not worth the salary for us.
I based the second point on the fact that the cap max is 56.7 million dollars and the minimum is at 44.5 million dollars. We want to be at the minimum. Most playoff teams can afford to be at the maximum. This is roughly a 22% difference or for 4.5 million, an increase of 1.125 million in perceived value.
