I'll admit I'm surprised. I thought they would trade Backstrom and retain Harding. And I was sure they would deal Backstrom to the Red Wings. Still, it's a good move for Minnesota. They get their ace goaltender locked up for four seasons, at what is the going rate now for a top 10 goaltender.

I would expect they'll be shopping Harding, but I don't know if they'll get anything done before tomorrow. There are teams in the market for a goaltender, but I don't think they would be looking at a guy like Harding, who has never been a No. 1 at the NHL level, and has no experience in the rigors of NHL playoff hockey. If Harding is dealt tomorrow, it'll probably be to a lesser team that could use an excellent young goalie who will be a No. 1 for years to come.

Good deal for both sides. Bad deal for the Oilers.

Harding should hold out and demand a trade immediately. To never be given a shot in Minny means that he has to get out of town. If he signs with Minny, he is a fool and is just happy to have a job. If he has any pride, he will leave ASAP.

Harding to the Avalanche makes too much sense. Harding for Hensick. Get it done please.

Excellent value in this contract. The money puts him between Huet and Miller, when in reality he's significantly better than both.

Good job Minny.

Thank goodness! Pleased with both the term and length. Fair deal all around.

Now we can talk about offers for Harding.

Exactly. 6m a year is very reasonable now and he'll look downright cheap in 2011...

Call me crazy - but it would take a young forward prospect that you don't want to move. I don't think the Wild would be interested in Carle or Jones. I don't think that Lupul would get it done based on his contract that starts up next year - but that's just IMO.

Good for Minny.

Now do they start shopping Harding? He's got the skills to be a number 1 goalie in the league... I think he could generate intrest.

How is that a bad deal for the Oilers? They have been owning this guy as of late. Haven't they chased him from the nets in all of his last 4 starts against the Oil?

Sure his record against Edmonton looks amazing, because he gets pulled and the replacement goalie gets the loss..

He's in the "Ryan Miller area" despite the fact that Backstrom has utterly dominated him in Save %/GAA over the last 3 seasons. Terrific deal for Minnesota.
lets see what millers stats would be in that boring system over yonder. Better yet lets see what Baclstrom would do in the run n gun scheme Buffalo has protecting 2 on 1s left and right. Moron

There is a reason a backup like harding has just as good numbers when he plays. Backstrom is a result of the system played.

Kari Lehtonen is there too.

For 3-4/per gives your team either 20 games and lots of worries. Or 60+ matches of world class goaltending. As a bonus, he can win titles ALONE!

As a pro athlete, your shelf life is limited. To accept a minor role for another 4 yrs would be idiotic. Unless he`s happy with making a decent salary with ZERO pressure. This has nothing to do with class. It has everything to do with maximizing his opportunity in the NHL and his earnings potential.

Time to grow up.

Awww, I wanted Ottawa to sign Backstrom. Now I don't want any goalie out there.

But, really, really great signing by Minny. I can't imagine this one backfiring in any way.

I was referring to your suggestion to "hold out and demand a trade immedietely", what does that even mean?

Flame me if you want but could Minny have signed him for a good 4 year contract and still shop him now that he has a solid contract for a good 4 years? Could that be a tactic to add value to your player before shipping him off to another hockeytown?

I mean to me, an upcoming UFA Backstrom is worth a lot less then a Backstrom locked up for 4 years.

Has a thing like that been done in the past? lol

I heard there is a NTC included for atleast the first two years. No official source, but that makes sense for a veteran to request that to protect himself.

^^There's a conditional NTC with this deal, so, no, he's not going to be traded.

Yeah I guess that would make sense. But I'm sure its happened at least once before that a GM signs a player and then deals him before the trade deadline. Or is that too scummbagish? Maybe the player could find an interest in doing this as well. He assures himself of obtaining a good contract before being dealt
