I'll say it again, there is no way we can table a better package than Philly but if Florida is really keen to move him to the West they don't have a ton of options cap wise. I'm surprised we haven't heard mention of Calgary or Edmonton being in the mix, I have to assume they have too many cap issues.
I'm just really not interested in giving up cheap, young, reasonably signed talent for an UFA. There HAS to be a contract in place if Gillis does this. Is Jay-bo really much better than Bieksa who is signed at 3.75 for two more seasons? Or how about Edler at 3.25 for 4 more years? He could be a complete steal by next year the way he's played the last dozen or so games.
Looking at some of these proposals. thank god you guys aren't the gm of the canucks.
Way to overpay. Jaybo is not a top 10 dman, i repeat, Jaybo is NOT a top 10 dman.
And chances are he will get paid like one.
1st and raymond + prospect, or 1st and ohlund + prospect is fair.
No bieksa, def no kesler/burrows/edler.
I disagree. Bouwmeester is in my top 10 and at 25 years old should be in Norris discussion for the next decade. The fact he plays as many minutes as any other player in the league and is the current NHL iron man make him all the more valuable. With Bouw's size, skating, durability and minutes played he covers more ice and influences the flow of the game as much as any player in the NHL IMO. If he keeps improving, look out.
Apparently Bouwmeester doesn't have any loyalty to the franchise either. It's been widely reported he's not interested in re-signing with Florida. Ohlund also stated on Vancouver radio that whatever team he's traded to or signs with in the offseason, it will be his last and only move. I'm sure he'd have no problem coming to an agreement with the Panthers, especially if the team has a good playoff showing this year.
Ohlund is a depreciating asset. I would be absolutely dumbfounded if the Panthers couldn't get a better offer than that from Philly or any of the other 27 NHL teams.
I'm kinda going that way as well. As much as I like Jay-Bo Vancouver already has some pretty damn solid young defensemen in Edler and Bieksa plus a couple vets who aren't going anywhere in Mitchell and Salo. Do we really want to tear our team apart for Jay Bouwmeester? I dunno. It would really depend on a number of issues, not the least of which is his willingness to re-sign here.

I'd put Salo on the trade block too if it meant getting back Bouwmeester.

Oh man you've obviously never watched Jay Bouwmeester play hockey.
I just don't see any way Bieksa will be traded, he is very underated.
He gives the puck away here and there but he hits, fights, scores, puts up points, and can semi-run your PP.
also is young and is getting better.
If the Canucks are trading for Bouwmeester they at least have to get close to JVR and Lupul. Canucks don't have an influx of forward prospects so they at least have to trade either Bieska or Edler. Florida would not want Ohund cause he is a UFA. They will want a guy that is under contract. I don't think they would want Schnieder either.

I agree, like I said before if Gillis is making a push for him before the deadline I just hope he doesn't sacrifice the future in the sense of Edler, Bieksa, or Hodgson. If he could possibly make a deal around Ohlund, 1st, Raymond and etc, then it would make sense for both teams. I'm getting the feeling he'll just try to get him during the offseason and see where his cap situation stands.
