Kalinin under old system- Absolute disaster

Kalinin under new system- Yet to be seen, but so far so good.

Kalinin is best suited to contribute to a team offensively in a system where the defensemen are expect to contribute. Under Renney's system any offense from the point was a bonus. Under Tortorella's system any offense from the point is essential. There are reason's there are players who are horrible for one team go to another and suddenly start doing well. There are many different tactical systems that suit different players. Kalinin's role on the team under Tortorella is blatantly different than that under Renney. Kalinin simply is not a solid defensive player that can fit into a defensive system. He's completely exposed when that happens. Under Tortorella is a completely different story. He's a quick skater with a decent shot, and that is what is necessary to contribute under Tortorella.

I don't think Torts has any influence on what is going on at this time. Eventually he will have his input, but he had too little exposure to the team. It's all Slats, IMHO.

Since December 20th Kalinin is a (+9). That is incredible on a team that has struggled to score during that time. I mentioned this in one of the post game threads but in my opinion, since coming back from his injury 7 games ago, Kalinin has been as good or better than anyone on our defense.
as i posted in another thread, kalinin has played well lately and really, other than that fumble with the puck in his feet the other day, hasnt played any worse than our big ticket dmen have and in fact, may be playing as well as any dman we have. he has skills, skates very well and plays in all 3 zones.

i like his game lately, he seems to have found some confidence and i think renney being gone will help him.

He had an edge, which I liked...but I have a feeling when Torts questioned the team's conditioning after the first game, he had Reitz in mind. Not to mention he handled the puck like it was a hand grenade.

ehh didnt get to know him well enough..but it doesnt help that he was a member of the team during a stretch of 3 wins in 15 games heh
especially getting burned a few times in that 10-2 stars debacle

I'm also one that though Reitz was decent. He just seemed to get exposed playing everyday since all he is a 7th defenseman.

He was a bum. If you want a tough guy who sucks at hockey we may as bring back Puritin.

Me, too.

I didn't think waiving him made much sense considering he has a fractured foot and could have just be placed on the IR.

I guess they didn't consider him a part of the team's future unfortunately. I felt he made a solid 7th D.

Yeah, but you only get 4 (I think... can someone confirm?) non-emergency call-ups/send downs after the trade deadline. So in order to keep him from hitting the cap once he came of IR, they'd have to assign him then and use one of their moves.

Interesting.

I didn't think of that.

Thanks, Squish.

I'm curious if they go after another defenseman, or if they have faith enough in Potter and/or another Pack member as their reserve 7th.

They only waived him because of his broken foot.

They will absolutely, positively go after another defenseman (or two).

I liked him too. Guy definitely played hard, gave alot of effort. Not a superstar or probably even an everyday guy, but a decent depth guy. I definitely think a trade is on the way, albeit I doubt a blockbuster. Probably something in the mold of the Sjostrom deal.

Good for him. There should be a spot for him on some NHL teams as a 6th defenseman. Good physical presence.
